Windham Resident Rylee Simmons Chosen as Jimmy Fund Clinic Patient Partner
submitted by Madison J. Dennis Jimmy Fund patient, Rylee Simmons, 2, has been named one of the Jimmy Fund Clinic Patient Partners for Burger King’s A Chance for Kids program. Rylee lives with her parents Jon and Melissa. All proceeds from this program benefit pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Rylee was diagnosed in 2010 with leukemia. She enjoys coloring and helping her parents cook. From July 25 through September 5, guests at participating Burger King restaurants will be asked to contribute a dollar to the Jimmy Fund, as part of the restaurant’s A Chance for Kids program with their purchase. With each contribution, restaurant guests will receive a promotion card guaranteed to be a winner, with prizes ranging from all-inclusive resort vacations and airline tickets, to theme park admissions and Burger King food. “It is great way to for people to make a
big difference in the fight against cancer by just giving a little,” said Suzanne Fountain, director of the Jimmy Fund. Burger King restaurants have generously supported the Jimmy Fund since 1999, raising more than $9.5 million for pediatric cancer research and care. Participating Burger King restaurants are located throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio. The Jimmy Fund, an official charity of the Boston Red Sox, supports the fight against cancer at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for children and adults with cancer around the world. Since 1948, the generosity of millions of people has helped the Jimmy Fund (

Windham Garden Club Honors Top Achievers at Gala Dinner
submitted by Linda M. German Closing out its 21st year, the Windham Garden Club celebrated season’s end at its annual Summer Solstice dinner and awards event on June 16 at the Searles School.
Outgoing president Bea Heinze cited many Club highlights of the past 10 months, including the highly successful Plant Sale and raffle, the group’s 20th anniversary reunion, and the fundraiser aiding the Dover, DE, Air Force Base memorial garden.

submitted by Pelham Police Department The Police Explorer Program is a program open to all youth from the community ranging from 14 to 21 years in age. The Police Explorer Program is sanctioned by the Boy Scouts of America, and is maintained and staffed by members of the Pelham Police Department. It is strictly a volunteer program that gives service to the Police Department and the community. The Explorer Program is a structured program that gives young men and women the academic and technical training needed to become future Law Enforcement Officers. The program also gives Explorers the leadership skills and self-discipline needed to become successful community leaders. To become a Police Explorer, applicants must attend an Explorer Academy, which teaches the basic skills utilized by Explorers throughout their Explorer experience. The Explorer Program focuses on team-building skills and unity, while teaching these young men and women to work together for one common goal. The Explorer Academy is a discipline Academy that focuses on physical conditioning, reading, writing, and comprehension skills, as well as interpersonal communications. Once an Explorer Cadet completes the Explorer Academy, they become Pelham Police Explorers. Police Explorers provide a valuable service to the community by assisting in traffic-related duties, fingerprinting of children for “Kid print” programs, Color Guard details for community functions, and Administrative service to the Police Department. Explorers also compete in and attend regional and local Explorer Competitions and Fun Days. These competitions challenge Explorers in team activities and also in individual physical competition events. To become a Police Explorer, one must complete an Explorer Application and return the application to the Police Department. Police Explorer Cadets will be introduced into the Explorer Program and attend monthly meetings, while being assigned to a Senior Explorer to assist them throughout their Academy training.
