Nesmith Quilters Second Annual Raffle Was a Great Success

Increase in Retirement Contributions

May Result in Cuts in Education by Barbara O’Brien

A rise in the local contribution to the State Retirement Fund will likely result in a reduction of money for education. In fact, Windham School District administrators are already looking into places they might make those cuts, if necessary. SAU 28 Business Administrator Adam Steel provided School Board members an update during their meeting on June 20, urging them to be proactive in letting local State Legislators know how they feel about the New Hampshire Senate Retirement Reform Bill. Steel said the proposed legislation had already been vetoed by Governor John Lynch and sent back to the House and Senate “to wrangle with.”

submitted by Patricia Barstow The Nesmith Quilters wrapped up a very successful second season by presenting a check to the Nesmith Library on Thursday, June 23. Thanks to the generosity of supporters in Windham and beyond who purchased raffle tickets, they realized a profit of $1,634, which they donated to the library for the purchase of circulating materials. Both the library and the quilters are interested in receiving recommendations from the public regarding what items should be purchased with this money. The drawing for the Nesmith Quilters’ second annual

queen-sized raffle quilt, “Midnight Garden,” was held at the Strawberry Festival on June 4. The winning ticket was drawn by second grader Katherine Wimmer and the lucky winner was Jenna Sarette. In addition to the check, the Nesmith Quilters also

gave the library a small wall hanging quilt to honor the library’s wonderful staff. This quilt, called “Enchanted Garden,” was designed by the quilters themselves and was inspired by the raffle quilt. This quilt will be displayed in the library. The Nesmith Quilters would like to thank the community for making their second annual quilt raffle a resounding success. They would also like to announce that they are about to start work on next year’s quilt, which will be raffled off at the 2012 Strawberry Festival. Anyone wishing to join the group can get further information at the library.

Under the proposed reform, the local contribution to the State Retirement Fund, which includes teachers, would rise from 9.07 percent to 13.9 percent, as of July 1. This increase could mean a $700,000 hike in retirement contributions for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year; money that was not included for the new school year. “We’ll need to cut some place to make up the difference,” Steel said.

School Board Vice Chairman Bruce Anderson asked if municipalities could launch a lawsuit against the State regarding the unexpected increase. Interim Superintendent Henry LaBranche said it is his opinion, based on previous experience, that taking legal action in such a case would be “spending good money to chase a bad herring.” “There’s not much chance of success,” LaBranche replied. “This is a difficult problem for building principals,” Steel told board members. “They’re approaching possible cuts with trepidation.” “There’s still nothing set in stone,” Steel continued. “We’re expecting the worst, while hoping for the best.” Time is of the essence, Steel said, with the new school district budget set to take effect on July 1. “The airplane’s going to take off, but we’re uncertain where it will land.” LaBranche said all sorts of speculation

is rampant regarding the situation, including potential cutbacks in areas of technology. “We’re not hiring, as expected,” he said. “The hope is, though, that we’ll be able to salvage some of these [teaching] positions.”
