Pack 610 Ushers in Summer with Rockets and a Cross-Over
submitted by Lucy Wilkerson Pelham’s Cub Scout Pack 610 culminated a year jammed of
activities with its annual Rocket Derby. Rockets soared at Raymond Park in Pelham on Saturday, June 18, as one by one, 20 Cubs pressed the ignition button that sent their rocket soaring over tree tops. Scouts and their families enjoyed the afternoon playing in the sun, while others made or put the finishing touches on their rockets. This year’s theme was “Space.” Families painted and decorated “alien” rocks, made their own binoculars and space helmets, and played disk tag.

watermelon, the boys retired the colors (lowered the flag) and were honored for all their hard work during our Cross-over Ceremony. Scouts received belt loops and/or arrow points in sports, academics, citizenship, health, nutrition, etc. To mark completion of their current trail, each boy was awarded their rank badge, Tiger, Wolf, or Bear, as they were ushered into the next level in their Scouting journey. As twilight descended, families gathered around the campfire. Those who stayed settled into their tents for the first official campout of the season. The boys are already gearing up for their next service project.
July will see the boys at the Pelham Independence Day Celebration to be held on Sunday, July 3, and later in the month holding a Bike-a-Thon to raise money to replace the four splintered picnic tables at Pelham Veteran’s Memorial Park. The Pack received a very attractive and generous employer match for the tables. The boys must raise the first $500. Once raised, a Massachusetts-based employer has pledged to match an additional $500. The $1,000 is enough to purchase all four desperately needed tables. Help the boys reach their goal. Gavin Filip’s Rocket Launch Pelham Community Honors Founder of the Food Pantry
submitted by Marian O’Brien On Friday, June 24, family members, friends, and colleagues of Marietta Potter gathered to pay tribute to her upon her retirement as the founder and coordinator of the Food Pantry of Pelham at St. Patrick’s Parish. The reception took place at St. Patrick’s Parish Center.
As the children’s librarian in the town of Pelham, Potter realized that many of her young patrons and their families were often going hungry. Because of them, she was motivated to establish a food pantry in town. Over the last 21 years, many of the working poor,

"As a busy mom, I love that my entire family can receive care at Primary Care of Hudson. It's comforting to be recognized and greeted by name, whether I'm there with my kids, my parents, or by myself." - Julie Poulin (pictured right) with mom Celine, son Zachary, and daughter Juliana

the disabled, the elderly, and veterans have been able to turn to the food pantry for assistance. Potter was presented with a plaque and an angel pendent. Cheryl Brunelle, current coordinator of the food pantry, addressed the more than 80 people who had gathered. She told them that the plaque they were presenting that night would hang in the food pantry to preserve the memory of what Marietta had done for the poor of the community. The plaque reads, “For Marietta Potter, in appreciation to her commitment and dedication to feeding the hungry. November 1990 to January 2011.” John Patrick Potter, Marietta’s grandson, spoke on behalf of family members who had gathered. He said, “My family and I are extremely fortunate to have our grandmother’s wisdom, support, and love throughout our lives. She is a very special person to all of us and none of us would be where we are today without her. She is loving and caring of both our family and the community of Pelham … my grandmother is a shining example of what makes America so great—people working hard to make a better life for themselves and their families, but moreover recognizing when people are in need and helping them.”
