Mitt Romney Visits Mosaic Technologies
by S. Aaron Shamshoyan Former Massachusetts
Governor Mitt Romney met with local businessmen at Mosaic Technologies to discuss problems with the economy, lower taxes, healthcare, job creation, and banking regulations. Each member of the panel had a chance to ask Romney questions related to their businesses, to which he would directly respond. Addressing the New Hampshire economy, Romney said, “The people of New Hampshire have waited long enough; they want to see good jobs, they want to see rising incomes, they want to see an economy that’s growing again, and the president’s failed.” He added, “People are hurting, home prices continue to go down, foreclosures are at a record level, and we’re not seeing the kind of growth that people had expected for this year—frankly for last year, either—his politics [President Obama] just didn’t work.”
Romney said his job in government is to
encourage success of businesses. “I realize, if I’m in government, my job is to make your job easier, to make it

Propane Leak Ignites , Home Scorched
by Andrea Ganley-Dannewitz An underground propane tank struck by a contractor using a bobcat caused quite a stir on
June 23. The incident, which occurred on Cove Road along Arlington Pond, happened just before 9:45 a.m. and resulted in a 30-foot fireball that scorched the outside of the home at 31 Cove Road once the propane ignited. The Salem Fire Department responded immediately, also receiving mutual aid from Windham,

he would be able to create jobs and stimulate the economy. “Look around at the states that are growing—low tax rates, right to work, educated work force, and a work ethic that brings good jobs,” he said. Romney said he could institute a program to give employers a grant to train workers who have been out for work for over a year and whose skills were out of date. “Let’s give the money to the employer who hires them, so they can train them in a job that’s actually needed,” he said. Romney closed by saying, “That’s the whole idea about how government ought to be working, not just figuring out how to spend what it takes from you, but how to make you more successful, and that attitude seems to be missing in Washington; Many people in Washington see you as the enemy.” He then said the dollar is only a value if it stands behind goods or services produced in the private sector. Derry, and Methuen, MA Fire Departments. According to Assistant Fire Chief Paul Parisi, the contractor did not see the fill valve to the underground propane tank, as he had no knowledge of it being there and it was obscured to his vision. “Once he realized what had just happened, he ran to the home to make sure everyone got out and to call for help,” Chief Parisi said. Neighbors in the tight-knit area heard the explosion and once they looked outside, the 30-foot fireball is what they saw. Fortunately, no one was injured. The home at 31 Cove Road was dangerously close to the flames and had just been remodeled. Firefighters
from Salem and Windham were able to get most of the fire under control within minutes, but with the propane continuing to leak and flames still present for many hours, the

firefighters had to douse the 500-gallon propane tank and flames with 500 gallons of water per minute, pumping water from Arlington Pond. Hay bales were set up along the waterfront to prevent any contamination to Arlington Pond. Fire crews remained on the scene for a very lengthy amount of time, dousing the leak and making sure the fire did not spread to the home and nearby detached garage. “The initial fireball was about 30 feet high and about 40 feet deep; it did scorch the length of the home and there were some tense moments there for a while,” said Chief Parisi. According to Assistant Chief Parisi, only the exterior of the home on one side was damaged and
windows cracked. Just about a dozen firefighters, three engines, a medic, and an ambulance responded to the blaze, along with a water tanker from Windham. Derry and Methuen firefighters responded to Salem’s Central Fire Station on Main Street for station coverage while firefighters remained on the scene at the residence on Cove Road. Personnel remained on the scene well through the night. Assistant Fire
Chief Paul Parisi has advice for every resident of Salem that has an underground propane tank on their property. “It is very

important to know where the fill valve for your tank is and to build protection around it to prevent something like this from happening; even using large rocks surrounding it can help contractors see that something is there. It is also very important to advise contractors doing work on the residence that an underground propane tank is present on the property,” Parisi said. Over the past several years, including one last year on Sycamore Drive, there have been similar incidents with fill valves on propane tanks under the ground being struck and a fire resulting.
