New England Diamond Gems Girls’ Fast-Pitch Softball Has Successful Weekend
submitted by Michael P. Wallace The New England Diamond Gems girls’ fast-pitch softball
program competed in numerous softball tournaments throughout New England. On Father’s Day Weekend, the New England Diamond Gems softball program won three tournaments and finished second in two other tournaments. In Templeton, MA, the NE Diamond Gems 14U Orange won the
NSA Father’s Day Bash, going 6-0 to win their second consecutive tournament. They hit five home runs on the weekend, outscoring their opponents by a 47-14 margin. The pitching staff was outstanding, throwing 47 Ks and giving up only three walks. For the season, they are now 16-3. The 16U Gems White team won their NSA Father’s Day Bash, also held in Templeton. They went 5-1 for the weekend to win the title in their first tournament of the summer. Outstanding pitching, defense, and timely hitting were the key to their tournament victory. The 16U Gems Orange played in Connecticut in an ASA Eastern National Qualifier, finishing in second place and earning a Eastern ASA National Championship Bid by defeating the CT Xtreme Chaos and the Long Island, NY Bandits before losing in the finals. The competition was exceptional, with teams from the New York and
Connecticut area competing in the tournament. The New England Diamond Gems were led by great hitting from Brittany Wallace of Salem (winning RBIs in the semifinal and a home run in the championship game), Corrine Auger (home run and multiple base hits throughout the tournament), Tori Alcorn, Ashley Abad, Kelly McCarthy, Kelsey Smith, Lucy Garner, Kelsey Murphy, and Megan Bishop. The 18U Gems White finished second this weekend in the Diamond Gems Classic held in Nashua in their first tournament of the year. They finished with a record of 6-1 and outscored their opponents by a 51-10 margin. Strong pitching, including three shutouts and a powerful offense, led to their success. The 18U Gems Orange won the Diamond Gems Classic, going 6-0 for the weekend. The Gems pitching staff of Kaitlyn Johnson, Michaela McGowan, Amy Lalancette, and Julia Nolan only allowed seven runs for the weekend while the offense was led by Jess Barrett, Rachel Bohannan, Lindsay Bolduc, and Lalancette, with 36 runs in their games. The Gems defense was outstanding for the weekend as well. Bolduc, Bohannan, McGowan, and Amanda Szidat all made exceptional plays in the field. The Gems Orange is now 8-0 on the season.
