Tavistock & District Local History Society: A Field Walk with Ann Cole & Tom Greeves


Meet at SX467 788 by the sheds on the right hand bend 6.30pm. (From Tavistock take the Lewdown/Brentor Road. Turn left to Chillaton & left again at signpost to Chaddlehanger). A field trip to the abandoned settlement of Briscotts, documented from the Medieval period to the mid 20th century. Part of the Tavistock Abbey & Duke of Bedford lands. The walk will be across pasture land, but the ground is hilly. Walking boots are recommended and if it is, or has been, wet wear wellington boots as there are muddy places which have to be crossed. The building remains include a circa 19th century Duke of Bedford house, a much older dwelling, earthworks (query medieval settlement) and leats. The walk will take around 2 1/2 hours.
