diversity under one roof I

t’s not easy being a young jobseeker at the moment. Saddled with student debt, hampered by a housing market where the banks’ portfolio of first-time buyer mortgage

options are woefully feeble, and with the economic recovery just managing to limp along, getting a decent start in life is looking more like an unrealistic aspiration. And while, thankfully, the surge in unemployment predicted by some hasn’t happened, the employment market is hardly at its strongest, which makes laying the foundations for a lifelong career especially daunting.

Even the most bullish jobseeker will admit to some insecurities. Questions such as ‘Will I get a job at all?’ to ‘What will my colleagues be like?’ and ‘What are the prospects?’ are bound to spring to mind, as well as all the usual issues surrounding CVs, job applications and interview techniques. Some would say that all this is a rite of passage – and to a degree they’d be right – but if you identify as LGBT, even more questions are raised: ‘Does the company have an equality and

diversity policy?’; ‘What if my manager is hompohobic?’, ‘Are their any gay people on the board of directors?’; ‘Should I come out at work, and how?’… issues which our straight friends simply don’t have to consider. Fortunately, help is at hand. Now in its third

year, the Diversity Careers Show aims to introduce LGBT jobseekers to dozens of switched on, gay- friendly organisations who appreciate the value of a truly diverse workforce and who actively seek job applications from all sectors of the community. The Show is produced by Square Peg Media in partnership with Stonewall, and headline sponsored by French bank Société Générale and is supported by Google and the Royal Air Force. The official media partner is The Guardian. The event not only allows potential applicants to talk first-hand to employers, but also includes a free CV clinic run by Google, a student and grad zone and a full programme of seminars from industry leaders and from Stonewall. “In a tough competitive climate employers want to ensure

that they recruit and retain the best talent that’s available to them. Events like the Diversity Careers Show help employers engage potential staff who may have assumed that certain sectors wouldn’t support and develop lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. At the show, Stonewall will run a programme of seminars ranging from recruitment to leadership development to give gay jobseekers a real insight into the best ways to tap into their full potential,” said Laura Doughty, Stonewall Deputy Chief Executive. Linda Riley, director of Square Peg Media,

commented that, “switched on organisations have long valued the importance of a vigorous diversity recruitment policy. As their marketplace gets tougher, companies need to ensure that they are recruiting the very best, and many are reaching out to LGBT candidates to guarantee that their company does not miss out on the right person for the right job.” Linda’s sentiments are echoed by Lynne

Featherstone, Minister for Equalities, who told us “In these challenging economic times, it’s more important than ever for employers to make the most of all the talent available. When a company reflects the society it serves, it’s better for the employer, the employees and the customers, so it’s vital that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have equal access to jobs and careers advice. Events such as the Diversity Careers Show help make this happen, and I wish the organisers every success.” Visitors to the show can expect to be greeted

by a broad range of exhibitors, which include household names such as American Express, Genesis Housing, Metropolitan Housing Trust, Waitrose, the Financial Services Authority, London Ambulance and Fire Services, Ernst & Young, Royal Bank of Scotland and several more.
