tCm: Do you think horse slaughter plants will reopen in the USA? KL: I have to hope not. I believe the American people won’t let that happen. Its up to us to keep it from happening. Right now there is a vote looming in the House where by on June 15 our policy makers will vote whether or not to fund horse slaughter in this country with tax payer dollars. If passed, that would open the doors for horse slaughter plants to be reopened in the US and that is why there is such a strong need for federal ban on horse slaughter to protect our horses from slaughter once and for all.
tCm: Has Saving America’s Horses won any awards? KL: Yes! At the premiere screening in The Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival we won Best in Festival, which is as good as you can get! Then we went on to win the Prestigious Merit Award Accolade competition, an industry competition, a juried process. We’ve won awards for investigative jour- nalism, cinematography, advocacy, conservation and editing. The film brought attention to the fact that both our land and our horses need to be preserved and protected at the In- ternational Wild Life Film Festival in May in Montana.
tCm: How did you finance this film? KL: The film’s funding is a combination of donations and donated services. We do have sponsorship opportunities available.
tCm: Along with being a filmmaker, you also rescue horses from slaughter. How do you finance your rescues? KL: Donations through our parent organization, Wild for Life Foundation, which is a 501c3 to protect and preserve horses both wild and domestic. Our rescue program called Lifetime Equine Refuge saves many thoroughbreds and wild horses as well. The thoroughbreds go through a rehabilitation program. Many are adopted.
