trueCOWBOYmagazine: Since our last interview, a lot has happened for you including completion of your award winning film “Saving Americas Horses”, (SAH) a film that deals with the slaughter and human consumption of our American horses. Why did you make a film that concerns itself with horse slaughter? Katia Louise: I was just thinking about that the other day. I realized it needed to be done. No one was willing to go in that direction. It’s a complicated thing for me because its such a controversial issue with so many dark sides…so many of us just don’t want to think about the dark side of people and what goes on…because of that it continues and more goes on then we are aware of…layers and layers. A film like this was way beyond due.
tCm: Do you think Americans, in general, are aware of what is brewing for our horses, namely slaughter? KL: The majority don’t know what is going on. When they do know, they are outraged. Our government, and the horse industry, tucks it away. The truth is that slaughter is unspeakable treatment and our own country is sanctioning this. Coupled with the findings that toxins administered to horses when if consumed by humans would be harmful to our health.
tCm: What is the current state of horse slaughter in the USA? KL: Currently, there are no horse slaughter plants in operation in the USA for the purpose of human consumption. However, there is a strong push to try and reopen horse slaughter plants here. In the meantime our American horses, both wild and domestic, are being shipped across federal borders to Mexico and Canada where they are brutally slaughtered for their meat. Unbeknownst to many Americans thousands of horses are disappearing across federal borders.
tCm: Who is behind the horse slaughter movement? KL: Many, but most people would be surprised to know that there are those in our government, including the USDA, that actually support horse slaughter.
