THE DANFORTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL: NEW ENERGY FOR A NEW DECADE

During 2009 and 2010 Center Trustees worked to convene dialogues with prominent St. Louisans who have shown interest in the role of plant and life sciences in the economic future of the region. More than 80 people participated in these discussions, providing unique insights and new ideas. Leaders of the Center quickly recognized the value of continuing these dialogues, and founded the new Danforth Leadership Council, chaired by James L. Johnson III and joined by approximately 60 others.

“The Council was created to help build on this emerging jewel of St. Louis. Those of us who hold a keen interest and stake in the success of the St. Louis region want to take what is working in our region and help build on those strengths. It is our hope that we can lend our collective expertise in helping to make St. Louis a world center for plant science,” explained Johnson.

Though most Council members are not involved in plant and life sciences, they care deeply about St. Louis and its future, connect strongly with the Center’s mission and understand the role it can play in fostering economic growth. The group convenes three times a year to keep up with the Center’s progress and to share ideas about the region and its future. Once a year they host a presentation that is open to the community. These presentations focus on leadership, St. Louis’ potential and challenges, and other topics designed to provoke thought and conversation.

NEW VIDEOS ENHANCE CENTER TOURS

2010 marked an exciting new era of outreach and education for current and potential supporters. Three new tour videos were created for display on two newly mounted television screens located in the Center lobby and near the plant growth chambers. These videos help visitors gain a better understanding of the facilities and science at the Center.

The Center has offered tours of its building for years, however some of the scientific concepts have proven difficult for even the most skilled volunteer guides to explain. Up until now many Center scientists have volunteered their

time, but this pulled them away from their important research and proved logistically difficult.

With the new videos, visitors get the best of both worlds. No matter what their schedule is, they will get to hear from some of our most prominent researchers, and learn about complicated topics in a clear, visual manner.
