From Fri 29-Sun 31 July, Caerphilly comes alive with the sound of... cheese. The annual Big Cheese festival is now in its 14th year and is an extravaganza of street entertainers, living history encampments, music, dance, folk dancing, falconry, fire eating, minstrels, troubadours, craft stalls and the largest travelling funfair in Wales. The Big Cheese portrays the history, heritage and culture of Caerphilly and is a great attraction for locals and visitors alike. The event is expected to attract somewhere in the region of 80,000 people, and with the entire weekend event being free, there really isn’t any reason why you shouldn’t be one of them. The event takes place at the Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields, Caerphilly, and kicks off on Friday evening with the Great Cheese Race. Sean Wilson – Martin Platt from Coronation Street – will blow the starting whistle. The Big Cheese also has one of the biggest festival food and drink marquees in Wales – and this year it’s even bigger. Around 65 Welsh producers will gather to sell their delicious cakes, wine, liqueurs, sweets, chocolate, pickles and, of course, cheese. The event is for all ages, so while adults relax or indulge in the food and drink marquee, the children will be entertained by Theatre Of Alchemy, Fiery Jack, and the Newport Gwent Dragons. There will also be educational activities, an activity marquee and re-enactment displays.
