SOUTH WALES SECRETS #12: Merthyr Mawr Dunes

Welsh songstress Cate Le Bon shares one of her favourite places to escape in South Wales

With a new album on its way, Welsh singer song- writer Cate Le Bon has been hard at work over recent months. Hailing from Penboyr in Pem- brokeshire, and now residing in the Welsh capital, Le Bon is passionate about Wales and we asked her where she likes to escape the most when at home in South Wales. “Through the quiet idyllic village of Merthyr Mawr and down a narrow road lies a shady car park; much like many other shady car parks but this one is the entry point for something extraordinary. There is little indication that behind the thickets and trees, lie miles of magnificent sand dunes that roll out for a mile or so to the stunning Ogmore Beach. It is not overstating the case to say that passing from the woodland into the dunes is like

crossing into another realm. The transformation in landscape is immediate and dramatic. Indeed it is almost Narnia-esque. I can only imagine how exciting it must be as a child to visit such a place. “The dunes are wild and timeless. I have visited in all seasons and it wears them all equally well. It is easy to lose yourself in the labyrinth of paths that have been worn by man and animal and easy to wind up lost when the time comes to reluctantly make tracks towards the car. There is a childish excitement at the notion of being genuinely lost somewhere. Whenever I return to the dunes, I am always relieved to find that I have not idealised them unduly in my absence, and that they are as beautiful and bewitching as I have always thought. This is by far my favourite place to escape.”

To Cardiff South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) are gearing up for another colourful summer programme with a range of carnival arts workshops, carnival parades and theatre to look forward to. What SWICA don’t know about carnivals really isn’t worth knowing, and over three weeks from Tues 19 July to Thurs 4 Aug, SWICA will be hosting a series of workshops at the Channel View Leisure Centre in Grangetown; imparting their knowledge and passion for all things carnival. With giant puppet making, costume design and headpiece making on offer, everyone is welcome to join in. SWICA’s 22nd Cardiff MAS Carnival parade is set to take place on Sat 6 Aug. The carnival is sure to be alive with flamboyant costumes, great music and dynamic carnival creations as it winds itself toward the city centre from the Wales Millennium Centre. And If that isn’t enough, SWICA’s carnival-theatre production, MAGICK: The Last Royal Wizard, will be entertaining crowds outside the Blysh Festival at the Wales Millennium Centre on Sun 24 July, and also at Chapter Art Centre’s Carnival Night on Tues 5 July.

For more on SWICA’S forthcoming events in July and August, consult their website. Info: 029 2038 2094 / www.swica.co.uk
