Hudson’s Allison Blondin Honored with NH Fisher Cats’ Most Improved Student Award

U.S. Cellular’s Field Marketing Manager Stacey York presented the company’s Most Improved Student Award to Allison Blondin from Hudson Memorial School, Bonnie Marrissette from Milford High School, Jim Rice from World Academy in Nashua, and Jacob Gordon from West High School in Manchester prior to the June 8 New Hampshire Fisher Cats game. Each year, U.S. Cellular honors New Hampshire school children who were nominated by their teachers for making outstanding progress in academics and/or social skills during the 2010-2011 school year. As a sponsor of the Fisher Cats, U.S. Cellular recognizes their efforts during the game to give the students a chance to share their accomplishments with family, friends, and fans. The carrier has presented the awards to more than 120 students since 2007.

Ryan Brooks Kelly and the RBK Project are Memphis Bound!

Ryan Brooks and his band, the RBK Project, will represent New Hampshire at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. The band was a finalist at the Granite State Blues Society Road to Memphis Competition. The finals were held Saturday, June 18, at Tupelo Hall in Londonderry; with stiff competition, they finished first in the band category. The band will host an area fundraiser to help cover cost and traveling expenses as they make their way to Memphis. Ryan is a long- time resident and 2010 graduate of Alvirne High School. You can catch Ryan with the area’s well-known Smokehouse Lightning Band and also his original band, the RBK Project, playing at local venues.

NH Method for Evaluating Wetlands Updated for First Time in 20 Years

submitted by UNH Cooperative Extension New Hampshire communities, conservation groups, and natural resources consultants now have an updated, practical method for evaluating wetland functions. The NH Method, originally published in 1991, has been updated for the first time in 20 years through the efforts of its two main authors from UNH Cooperative Extension and the NH Method Work Group. Wetlands are an important part of the

hydrologic system, playing a key role in maintaining high-quality water supplies, reducing the amount and volume of storm- water runoff, and storing floodwaters, preventing downstream property damage. The NH Method was first developed in 1991 and, according to one of the authors, Amanda Lindley Stone, UNH Cooperative Extension specialist, Land and Water Conservation, long overdue for an update. “The NH Method is widely used in New Hampshire, so the update was needed to incorporate new information, studies and technologies. It also was an opportunity to incorporate feedback we have received from users over the years.” Officially known as the “Method for

the Inventory and Evaluation of Freshwater Wetlands in New Hampshire,” it has always been known as the NH Method, providing a scientifically-based, user-friendly method designed for both lay and professional audiences. The instructional format

provides a step-by-step process that allows users to learn about wetlands and wetland evaluation as they use the procedure. It is only available through its website, http://nhmethod.org, and can be downloaded as one document or by chapters. Over the past 20 years, the NH Method appears to be the most frequently used wetland evaluation method for town- wide and watershed- based wetland assessments in the state, and has been demonstrated to be both useful and accurate. Its ease

value and the overall objectivity of the resulting function evaluations have contributed to its popularity. Since 1991, the NH DES Wetlands Bureau Prime Wetlands Regulations have recommended it as the preferred method for evaluating wetlands for the purpose of Prime Wetlands designation. “The original NH Method was published prior to the wide availability of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in the early days of desktop computers, and prior to the availability of the Internet. Eighteen years later, it was ripe for an update that included new information sources and technologies. In addition, past users have suggested changes that are now incorporated into this revision,” Stone said. A UNH Cooperative Extension publication, Stone and Frank Mitchell, a UNH Cooperative Extension specialist, emeritus, are the main editors. Contributing authors are listed within the document. Updates include the addition of new scientific information and new technologies, along with revisions to the evaluation questions for clarity and the incorporation of new data from recent

studies. The NH Method is intended to be used for the following purposes: • Educating members of conservation commissions, other town boards, non- wetland professionals and the public about wetland functions and values.

• Evaluating one or more wetlands in a study area, such as a town or a watershed.

• Evaluating Prime Wetlands (RSA 482- A:15)

• Collecting baseline information about the wetlands in a study area.

• Creating a database of the scores for the evaluated wetlands for a number of functions, as well as other data about the wetlands in a study area.

• Supporting local planning and decision- making.
