Ingram Senior Center Hosts Hat Contest and Fashion Show

by Robyn Hatch As is a yearly tradition, the Hat Contest and

Fashion Show was held at the Ingram Senior Center on 1 Sally Sweet’s Way in Salem. The fashions came from the store on-site and averaged under $5 each. This year’s hats were very creative and were put together by many of the seniors themselves. This is an event that is looked forward to each year, if nothing more than to get a good laugh.

Salem Community Patriot Patriot

submitted by Louise Landry, Derry-Salem Elks The Derry-Salem Elks held the

annual Flag Day Ceremony; the ceremony began with a ritual to retire the old worn flags, followed by a ceremony to honor the American Flag. In the ceremony, Joseph P Grieve

(Your Patriotic Singer), 10, from Andover, MA, sang a tribute to the Armed Forces with a rendition of Patriot songs representing each branch of the service. This was followed by the reciting of the History of the American Flag by Jonathan Shepard. He spoke of the history of the flag, explaining the changes through the year while the Boy Scouts from Troop 263 in Windham displayed each flag. He started with the Pine Tree Flag, which represents the separation from England, followed by the year flag with a snake on it, and then came the flag that first looked like Old Glory with red, white, and blue. The history spoke of 1777 when Betsy Ross was asked to create the flag with 13 white and 13 red stripes representing the original 13 colonies. This flag became the base of all flags in the future since 1818 when adding star for each new state. The last star was added in 1959, representing Hawaii as the 50th state. The representation of the flag was

followed by The Response, which describes the honor of the flag today. Steven Shepard presented

Second Annual Pasta Fundraiser Honors Staff Sergeant Edmond Lo

by Robyn Hatch

In honor of Staff Sergeant Edmond Lo, his family held their Second Annual Pasta Night Fundraiser on June 3 at the

Derry-Salem Elks Lodge. This year, there were more great prizes, plus a delicious pasta dinner with beverages and desserts included. All proceeds benefit the SSG Edmond Lo Memorial Fund, which extends charities and donations to military branches in addition to scholarships. During the first year of fundraising, scholarships were issued to two Salem High School students who met the criteria and exemplified the morals and values of an outstanding citizen. On June 13, 2009, the United States suffered a great loss when Staff Sergeant Edmond Lo was killed in action while in Iraq supporting Operation: Iraqi Freedom. He was deployed with the 797th EOD Company to Baghdad, Iraq, for his second tour of duty with the Amy. He provided EOD support to the 25th Infantry Division in multi-national division north. Over the course of his career, he was praised for saving many lives by successfully disarming numerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) before one detonated, tragically ending his life.
