dards (FADS). A second floor running track and exercise room can be reached with an elevator, which also stops at the multi-pur- pose room’s stage.

FADS required that

washrooms have an 8 ft. diameter wheel- chair turning radius as opposed to 5 ft. re- quired by the Ontario Building Code. Artificial turf in the lawn bowling facil- ity – a solution only used once previously in Canada — solves the problem of new en- vironmental regulations which prohibit the use of weed killers – overcoming the ex- tremely high maintenance costs for conven- tional lawn bowling facilities, Knox says. While the facility accommodates the re-

quirements of seniors, it also provides re- sources for young people and families in- cluding a 24-spot daycare and a youth room including a foosball table and large screen television with Xbox 360 and Wii. Outdoors, Chamberlain designed park- ing for 150 cars but “we paid attention, we didn’t want a sea of cars in front of the building, so we found ways to blend the parking with the landscape.” Selected to complement the existing library and to re- spect the project budget, exterior materials used on the buildings are cultured stone cladding, stucco banding, and curtain wall glazing.

Overall, Knox says the project went smoothly with excellent collaboration be- tween town officials, the design and con- struction teams, trade contractors, and suppliers.
