Useful information
n Clothing Sensible light clothing is recommended and be sure to pack a practical sun hat, as parts of India get very hot. Take at least one long sleeved garment in case you need to cover up. If you visit places of worship, you will be asked to remove your shoes and cover your head.
n Customs and Entry Formalities All travellers, including Americans and those from Commonwealth countries, require visas.
n Driving In India, you can only hire a car with a chauffeur. Alternatively, take a taxi or a rickshaw, and be sure to agree the cost of the trip before you set out.
n Voltage 220 volts.
n Medical Make sure your travel insurance includes a comprehensive personal health insurance. Consult your doctor regarding any necessary vaccinations and anti- malaria precautions. Also be sure to take medication for potential stomach upsets. Do not touch any stray animals, particularly dogs and birds.
n Banking Hours Generally banks dealing with foreign currency are open from 10.00 to 14.00 hrs on weekdays and from 10.00 to 12.00 hrs on Saturdays.
n Credit Cards and Travellers’ Cheques Travellers’ cheques can be exchanged at banks, hotels and bureaux de change, but the commission rates vary considerably. Major credit and charge cards are accepted by hotels and restaurants.
n Public Transport For long-distance travel within India, ask your travel agent for details of special tourist air fares, as well as train and intercity bus availability. Make sure you go first class, because although there are ample rail and road links around the country, they come at widely varying costs and degrees of comfort!
n Taxis For shorter distances once you have reached your destination, taxis and rented chauffeur driven cars are reasonably priced and are recommended as the best way of making the most of your time in India.
n Tipping A tip of about 10% of the total bill is customary in restaurants.
n Time Difference 5.30 hours ahead of GMT.
n Tourist Information Offices There are Indian Tourist Offices in most major and large cities around the world that will provide you with information on all aspects of your trip.
n Water Avoid tap water and drink only properly sealed, bottled water.
NOTE: India can be divided roughly into three zones, the north, south and hill regions and into three distinctive seasons: winter, summer and monsoon (June to November). The best time to visit is from mid-September to early April, unless you are visiting the hill stations, which are fine at any time in the summer except during the monsoon, when torrential rains are expected.
