Last year, the Chandler Hazardous Household Waste Program brought in 170,000 pounds of material. Managing such a big disposal program is the responsibility of Solid Waste Field Supervisor Mark King. King works with his fi eld specialists and assists in monitoring and supervising Waste Management, the City’s residential collection contractor, and its performance per the City’s collection contract. He also monitors the day-to-day enforcement of Chandler’s City Code, Chapter 44, along with county, state and federal regulations for both collection and disposal of solid waste, which is an important task with the HHW program.
King, who has worked for the City’s Solid Waste Department for 17 years, believes the key to his job is establishing strong working relationships. Through knowledge, integrity and mutual respect, he works closely with staff,

contractors and residents to make the HHW program a success. He investigates and resolves solid waste-related issues reported by residents and works daily to improve operations, streamline work processes and works cooperatively with other city divisions to provide quality customer service.

He is also responsible for developing and implementing safety programs and training for Solid Waste staff and has completed several certifi cation programs including: Chandler’s Supervisor and Managers Academy, Environmental Auditing and Hazardous Waste Certifi cation, which is comprised of 40-hour Hazardous Materials and Hazardous Materials Categorizing and Chemical Testing. Prior to working for Chandler, King worked for 10 years at Hughes Aircraft in Southern California to develop and build Heads Up Displays, which are used to relay visual information to aircraft pilots.
He says the most enjoyable part of his job is knowing he has made a difference. “I enjoy seeing the smile on a satisfi ed customer’s face.”
King grew up in Southern California. When he is not working, he loves to surf and go
boogie boarding. He also enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, being near the beach and looks forward to the day when he can retire and combine all of his loves in either Costa Rica or Belize.
