VALLI WAITAKI PINOT NOIR 2008

(WAITAKI , NORTH OTAGO)

The Valli label first appeared without fanfare in 1998. It was the personal project of winemaker Grant Taylor, the man who did much to unlock the potential of Central Otago pinot noir during his pioneering tenure at Gibbston Valley Wines. Valli (which is Taylor’s mother’s maiden name) became Taylor’s central focus when he left Gibbston Valley in 2006. The Valli Waitaki Pinot Noir is one of three single vineyard pinots the label typically produces annually. It draws fruit from the Waitaki Valley in North Otago, the country’s newest pinot region. Since 2000, a number of players have been lured by the valley’s limestone soils, but cool climatic conditions (particularly at flowering) have led to very small crops in some vintages. Valli’s vineyard is close planted at 5000 vines per hectare, principally with Pommard and the Dijon clones, and Taylor is excited by the perfume and minerality he achieves in his Waitaki Pinot.
