ach and every year the dairy cow brings the industry together during conventions, shows, 4-H events, sales and seminars. Not only does she provide us with one

of mankind’s oldest and most essential foods she is our major source of income. Cows allow us the opportunity to learn from one another through networking and socialzing. Challenging breeders every day cows continue to provide both herd and breed improvement. Shown through production, type and genomics we quickly recognize how far each of the breeds have come.

Over the last few years we have utilized our passion and dedication to grow Cowsmopolitan making it the World’s fastest growing all-breeds magazine. Dedicated to serving you better we want your insight. This is your opportunity to help us keep Cowsmo fresh and exciting. M

ost of a dairy farm’s workforce consists of four-legged employees. These animals have the right to proper care and ethical treatment. Successful dairies work pro actively

with veterinarians, hoof trimmers and nutritionists to ensure that the needs of their animals are met. Herd health and cow comfort de nitely do pay dividends.

Dairy consumers also wish to be assured that the products which they purchase are produced under conditions of responsible animal care and best management practices. It has become the obligation of producers to promote and support measures that address these concerns.

Holstein Canada assists breeders in this regard by working to reduce health and genetic issues. Some avenues include in-house research and funding other research. Our Association is also represented on various national industry committees and boards. Holstein Canada continues to lobby for full dairy traceability as well as initiatives to control Johnes, among other issues.

Holstein Canada along with CDN and Semex have been leaders in applying genomics to genetic evaluations in Canada. In the future, further application of genomics may lead to improved disease resistance, better testing for recessives, reduced lameness, better mastitis resistance, etc.

The last few issues of Holstein Info have contained good articles on genomics. (Past issues can also be found on the Holstein Canada website). One article seems to suggest that a level of inbreeding could intensify bene cial genes while genomics could screen for unwanted gene combinations. Another article discusses how to use genomic testing for herd improvement. The screening and culling of heifers could eliminate some of the costs of raising all replacements.
