Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie continued on the theme of the Supreme Court dispute. He expressed surprise the FM was standing by MacAskill’s comments. Was the Justice Secretary acting with the backing of the Government when he said that he would stop the budget for the Supreme Court on the principle that “he who pays the piper ... calls the tune”, he asked. The FM referred to support for the SNP Government’s position on this issue from former Lord Advocate Elish Angiolini. Rennie said the Justice Secretary’s
comments, including calling a top judge an “ambulance chaser” was not the language of government ministers but the language of the “football terraces”. The FM retorted that he did not
think it right and proper that the legal system of this country was being second guessed because of imperfections in legislation. A review group will present proposals to this Parliament on the issue, he added.
“What is right and proper is to proceed in the way that the Cabinet agreed on Tuesday, which is to have a review group. The group will present proposals to this Parliament, which can then reach conclusions on behalf of the people of Scotland,” he said.
