lighting industry, but competition is emerging among retailers to be the first to implement LED lighting to reap the specific benefits this technology provides. Italian outdoor performance clothing manufacturer, Slam, undertook extensive research into the potential of LED lighting for the display areas of its new store in Bowness-on- Windermere. After testing numerous options, the company selected High Technology Lighting’s Quartet r2 track light incorporating the XSM LED module from Xicato. Although alternative products offered a
higher lumen output, Quartet r2 offered the high colour rendering and flexibility of twin beams from one spot light, addressing Slam’s requirement for style and innovation. And it is not only modern stores or new outlets that are seeing the light: Aplace, a fashion boutique in Sweden’s oldest department store, recently modernised and central to that refurbishment was the replacement of halogen with LED lighting. Projection Lighting’s AlphaLED Basic adjustable downlights were selected to replicate the vibrancy of natural light, create atmosphere and maximise product appeal. The fittings produce virtually no heat, eliminating the risk of damage to displays while reducing energy and maintenance costs. Wraith explains: “LED lighting delivers a high quality light output without emitting the ultra-violet (UV) light emitted by conventional light sources which can fade packaging and display materials.” Flexibility Along with the cost savings associated with LED lighting, flexibility is another major draw card. Wraith elaborates: “Retail display lighting must be adaptable to changes in layout and stock. The flexibility of LED fittings over conventional lighting, allows it to be designed around the display, instead of the display around the lighting. Fittings can be made compact enough to remain hidden within the smallest shelves and shallowest alcoves. “In addition, conventional strip lights are usually restricted to industry standard sizes, whereas LED fittings' sizes can be designed to suit individual displays.
