AHS Friends of Music Host NH State Chili Cook-Off

Alvirne Trustees Continue to Support Hudson Schools in a Big Way

by Doug Robinson Each year, the Alvirne Trustees ask of School Administrators and School Board members how they can financially help Hudson schools. “I do not know of any other high school principal where people say we want to spend money, up to $150,000. What do you want?” The philosophy behind the gifting requires that the donation be used in a way “above and beyond the norm,” which would not normally be supported by tax dollars or the school district’s budgetary process. In addition, their donated funds are also not to be used on personnel costs and are to be used to enhance programs throughout the schools. Principal Bryan Lane received approval for his proposed budget request of $135,000 from the Hudson School Board at their May 2 meeting. “This budget has been created as a list of items

Te lawns of the Hills House hosted many chefs cooking up their specialties of green chili, red chili (at right), and salsa

by Doug Robinson The grills were cooking and the pots were boiling as contestants from as far as Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Maine competed in the Alvirne High School Friends of Music Organization ninth annual Chili Cook-Off.

Located on the grounds of the Hills House, nearly two-dozen great chefs pitched their tents and provided samples of their award-winning recipes to the hundreds who attended. Green chili, red chili, and salsa were the flavors of the day. Several World Champion Chili Chefs were in attendance as they attempted to win the NH State Championship. Judges’ comments included “good texture,” “very mild,” as well as “too much tomato” or “no spice taste.” Each winner of the three divisions would qualify

for the World Championship Competition, which will be held in Manchester this coming October. The winners were:

• Best Boot and Showmanship: Linda McGrath (home not listed) • Salsa: Vicki Tankis, Webster, MA • ICS Chili: Jack Cowell, Ansonia, CT • Chili Verde: Dave Shulman, Avon, CT

for the Alvirne Trustees to consider,” wrote Lane. • Student Competition Support: $13,500. These funds would be used for our students to attend state and regional competitions. While the

band has a machine behind them to raise funds, the smaller organizations do not.

• Farm Equipment: $40,000. These funds would be used for the purchase of new tractor which would also be adapted to have bucketed attached to the front.

• Library Renovation: $70,000. “The Trustees have a passion for the Library,” continued Lane. Last year, the Trustees offered AHS $75,000 for the Library and this additional $70,000 will be used for technical upgrades, flooring, a security system, and wireless computer stations.

• Television Station Equipment: $16,000. It has been seven years since any new equipment has been purchased for the AHS television station and the station now needs to replace computers as well as perform some re-wiring needs in an effort to expand the capabilities of the television station.

Hudson School Superintendent Randy Bell stated that “Every year, the Alvirne Trustees have been inordinately generous with the school district and with Alvirne High School.”

Bike-a-Thon for St. Jude at Darrah Pond

submitted by Bonnie Pennucci I live in Litchfield. My daughter, Grace Pennucci, just turned 7 years old on May 11. When asked what she wanted for her birthday, she said, “I don’t want presents or a party. I just want to have a bike-a- thon to raise money for kids with cancer.” This was a very unexpected response. I mean, what 6-year-old doesn’t want presents on her birthday? About a week went by and

Grace was asked the same question, and she gave the same answer. This time, she was even more persistent about doing a fundraiser. So, I fast-forward to today and I’m writing to tell you that Grace will be following through with her ‘birthday request’ by organizing a bike- a-thon. She has chosen to fundraise for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which specializes in care for children with cancer. As their Website says, “St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.”

Litchfield on Saturday, June 11, at 11 a.m. It’s open to the public … all bikers and walkers

Her bike-a-thon will be at Darrah Pond in www.areanewsgroup.com www.areanewsgroup.com
