linked trends that have defined the indus- try over the past decade or so.


The first is its increasingly international


nature, dramatically illustrated by deci- sions to take the FIFAWorld CuptoQatar, the Olympic Games to Sochi and Riode Janeiro, the introduction of new events in Formula 1, and the rise to international prominenceofeventssuch as the Indian Premier League. Thesecond is sport’semergenceasa


serious business sector; with oneAmerican expertestimating thatglobal sportisnow worth more than a trillion dollars a year. Andthirdly,sportisalso gaining in


importanceonasocial level as ameans of promoting activityand good health and social cohesion. Consequently govern- ments around the worldare investing heavily in community sports programmes. It is a very different world to that which


existed little morethan ageneration ago. Then sport was largely run by amateur offi- cials and unpaid volunteers whose com- mitmentmay have been admirable but whose level of skill and knowledge would simply not have been fit forpurpose in today’ssophisticated, competitiveand technical sports sector.
