popularityacross the globe,sodoes the demand for high-qualitystadia at all levels of play. Floodlighting is essential to the operation of these venues to extend hours of usage, maximise player safety, ensure spectator enjoyment, and satisfy broadcast requirements. In collaboration with architects,engineers,and


designers, Musco Lighting brings football to light by employing its energy-efficient Green Generation Light- ing® floodlighting to meet the unique needs of football facilities around the world at all levels of play.


Reaching NewHeights in the Middle East Lighting was a major component of preparations for the high-profile international competitions at fiveQatar Olympic Committee (QOC)stadia; Al Qatar,AlArabi, Al Gharafa, Al Rayyan, and Al Sadd. Four of the QOC facilities had existing lighting sys-


tems, but an upgradewas necessary to meet the required lightlevels forthe 2011 Asian Games.(Theprestigious Asian Football Confederation (AFC)Asian Cupbrings together topteams from nations across Asia everyfour years.) However, the QOC specified lightlevels to meet FIFA’s Class Five standards instead, as they were at the time still in the bidding process forthe 2022 FIFAWorld Cup™; which they were duly awarded. MuscoLighting wasselectedbythe QOC because of its


experiencelighting other venues in the Gulf region and its relationship with local contractors, designers and the QOC. Partnership with design teams was essential to the success of these projects. Architects helped determine a

strategy for making the floodlights aesthetically pleasing and seamlessly incorporated into existing structures. Electrical engineers ensured the lighting could be inte- gratedwith the facilities’electrical systems.Ateam of structural engineers was critical in making certain the weight of the lighting was adequately supported, as well as wind load requirements met. Meeting FIFA Class Five standards required: adhering


to specified pole heights and locations; eliminating shadows from stadium rooftops; and minimising spill and glarelight. Muscoworked through full designs to establish the best lighting solutions for each facility. This included considerations for television broadcast, specta- tor enjoyment, and player safety.


Monumental Achievement in Sports Lighting Theresult wasamonumental achievementinsports lighting.Each 66m lighting column at Al Qatar,AlArabi, Al Gharafa, and Al Rayyan carries a staggering 186 lumi- naires. These fixtures are mounted on one of 23 cross- arms,hung on 18m-tall head frames.Each massive column has an exterior elevator for maintenance ease. An aircraft warning light caps off each towering struc- ture. Musco’sdesignteam worked closely with an out- side vendor who makes the columns to ensureeach structure could adequately withstand the quantity of fix- tures and wind load. Muscoengineers were able to use anearly identical


designscheme forAlQatar and Al Arabi, and another design for Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan.Whereas the Al Sadd stadium required special consideration, as it did not have
