www.SanTanSun.com Leadership skills honed at ‘Anytown’

SanTan Sun area teens and adults have the opportunity to build leadership skills and an appreciation of diversity at the Valley of the Sun YMCA’s Anytown summer camp, designed to build a community based on respect and understanding. In small discussion groups, participants challenge their personal biases, explore the sources of these patterns and learn techniques for overcoming them through interactive workshops, participants increase self-esteem, enhance trust, mutual understanding and respect.

“Anytown has had a lasting effect on my life,” says Anytown participant Steven. “It helped me transform from a socially awkward, insecure teen into the strong leader I have always wanted to become. I am now in college and studying social sciences as a result of my Anytown experience. I am working hard so one day I can help change the lives of teens in a positive way.”

Anytown is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills that will help them transform their home communities into places where individual differences are seen as positive tools that bring people together. “Anytown has utilized the power of experiential learning to raise awareness to diversity, social justice and self-empowerment,” says Program Director Lori Dennehy. “It is the hope of the Valley of the Sun YMCA that programs like this will help build a community that develops strong leaders and appreciates diversity.” The Anytown at the Y programs include:
