www.SanTanSun.com Grad week patrols beefed up

As new graduates of area high schools celebrate completion of their studies, Chandler police will be stepping up enforcement operations. During and after graduation week, Chandler Police Department offi cers, working in conjunction with an ICAN grant, will specifi cally target parties and minors consuming alcohol or smoking marijuana. Offi cers will be assigned to conduct proactive, zero- tolerance enforcement patrols targeting these crimes, according to CPD’s Sgt. Joe Favazzo.

He says funding for the additional patrol staffi ng was made possible by a grant for the prevention of juvenile substance abuse.

“The Chandler Police Department remains committed to the safety and well-being of our children and the prevention of potentially tragic events that can be associated with juvenile substance abuse during graduation,” says Favazzo.

WIN WIN: The friendly competition to see which mayor could bag the most food resulted in a tie between Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny, left, and Gilbert Mayor John Lewis, right, according to Albertsons Store Director Eric Smith, center. Each mayor bagged 400 pounds of food as part of a food drive for the hungry, and Albertsons donated the 800 pounds of food used in the Bag Off from their location at Lindsey and Warner in Gilbert. The five Albertsons stores in Chandler and Gilbert will also earmark all their May “$1, $3 and $5” cash register donations to the food drive, which benefits the Mesa United Food Bank, Chandler Christian Center and Matthews Crossing. Meanwhile, the final weigh-in of all donations from businesses, city employees and community members resulted in Chandler getting the most food at 5,929 pounds to Gilbert’s 3,669 pounds. That means Gilbert Town Council members will wear City of Chandler T-shirts at an upcoming meeting.
