Tax rate hike clearly just that I write in response to Mayor Tibshraeny’s May 21, 2011 letter in which he characterizes the proposed secondary property tax hike as being a tax decrease. There is certainly no dispute that City Manager Rich Dlugas has proposed a tax increase of 9 cents per $100 assessed property valuation. According to media reports, the City Council is considering other tax rate hikes.


In this context, when Mayor Tibshraeny refers to the Council “discussing a tax decrease” he is either being disingenuous or misleading. The truth is that property valuations are on the decrease. Leaving tax rates unchanged would result in lower property taxes for residents, which by the way would provide relief for homeowners after years of overpayments due to inflated property values. We didn’t hear anything from City regarding rebates to taxpayers for those overpayments.


On the contrary, the City spent taxpayer money on an extravagant new City Hall and realigning Arizona Avenue three or four times.


What the Mayor and City Council are engineering is to hike tax rates to compensate for lower property valuations on the belief that it will go unnoticed by Chandler taxpayers. Only in the mind of a politician can a tax rate hike be characterized as a “decrease.” Perhaps the Mayor has spent too much time in the state legislature where such buffoonery is commonplace.

Cut waste, don’t raise taxes I recently read the City of Chandler plans to increase taxes. In these tough economic times I don’t see that you have made sufficient cuts in the city’s budget to seek an increase in taxes from residents.


You have provided city employees, especially the police and firefighters, with extremely generous health care and pension benefits. Then you always seek their unions’ support at election time. After the elections the unions come to the council they just helped elect and you reciprocate with increased benefits.


Until our city services and employee costs have been totally reviewed to eliminate waste and overly generous benefits, no tax increase should be asked of from the citizens of Chandler. James Copeland, Solera
