AZ Arts Summer heats up at Heatwave Dance VYT stages ‘Hairspray’


Free dance lessons, dance camps and auditions are all on tap for Heatwave Dance this summer.


Check out free dance classes for ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary and more from June 6 to 9. Reservations are required, and beginners are welcome. Then three weeks of camps will be held for tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, tumbling, musical theatre and more for ages 3 and older. They include: June 6-9, Heat Dancers Edge; June 13-16, East Coast Intensive; June 20-23, West Coast Intensive.


Performance, competition and elite company auditions will be held Fri., June 10 at the Southern Chandler dance facility. Call for times and details. Tickets go on sale Fri., June 10 for Valley Youth Theatre’s production of 1960s-era musical “Hairspray,” running Aug. 12 through 28 at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix.


Other productions in VYT’s upcoming 23rd season include “Dora the Explorer, Live!: Dora’s Pirate Adventure,” Oct. 7 through 23, and perennial VYT favorite “A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail,” Dec. 2 through 23. Tickets available for MAC’s new season


Ticket sales open to the public at noon on Sun., June 26 for Mesa Arts Center’s 2011-12 Performing Live Series.


The upcoming season includes performances from a diverse array of artists, ranging from Bill Cosby and Lily Tomlin to Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Vince Gill and more.


McCartney tribute at Symphony Hall


The Phoenix Symphony concludes its 2010-11 season and APS Pops Series with a concert featuring Paul McCartney tribute artist Tony Kishman in “Live and Let Die” on Fri., June 10 and Sat., June 11 at Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix.


Tony Kishman performs McCartney hits through the Beatles and Wings eras, including “Eleanor Rigby,” “Live and Let Die” and “Let It Be,” backed by the Phoenix Symphony. Preconcert lobby activities feature a ‘60s and ‘70s theme. The Phoenix Symphony will resume performances with the launch of its 2011-12 season in September.
