KEEPING GODMANCHESTER SAFE
“Good Evening All!” That is how many of us grew up with PC George Dixon of Dock Green as the face of the friendly local policeman. Now times have changed. Our image of the police force have changed. But luckily one thing has not changed. You can still stop and talk to the familiar local police who patrol our streets.
Well almost, they are not exactly police but are now called Police Community Support Officers or PCSO’s to those of us who can remember which order the letters go in!
Debbie Thorburn and Shiralee Freeman who have both been involved with the force for over eight years take great pride in working with the community in Godmanchester. During this time they have seen crime and anti-social behaviour drop dramatically in Godmanchester and it a much safer place to live.
Said Debbie, “The biggest problem we have is parking. I do wish people would respect the double yellow lines. We go over and talk to people we see breaking the rules. We want to politely tell them what they are doing is dangerous, especially if it is on a bus route and please move. But the verbal abuse we are given is sad as we are only doing our job.”
It is up to the local Chief Constable how much power they give the PCSO’s. Fortunately Cambridgeshire has seen fit to give them the maximum power as opposed to the Metropolitan Area where the PCSO’s just patrol the street. Our ladies have the power to detain so be warned!
