In looking through last year’s article we realise that we have, with your help, made good progress in our aim of reaching the Royal Horticultural Society Gold Standard by 2012. To get to Silver Gilt, one step from Gold, in three years says much for the hard work and effort so many have made to further enhance the Town we all love.

We are not just talking of trees and flowers, but more importantly of making our residents feel good as they walk down the street or across the recreation ground. To see that hanging basket, window box or street planter put in with the loving care of those who have provided it. This is a caring Town – where neighbours matter!

This all comes across in so many ways. We have a very supportive Town Council, who have allowed us to plant the first trees for a Town Orchard – rare things these days – in Devana Park. The first eight fruit trees, with local varieties such as the Huntingdon Codlin apple and all generously donated, were planted during a short (wet!) ceremony at the end of February and, in time, the fruit will be there for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to the generosity of Luminus, we have also planted two Pyrus Chanticleer pear trees outside Charter House in Cambridge Street. Flowering in the spring and with russet leaves in the autumn, they will bring further colour to the street scene. If you would like to give a donation towards trees, bluebells or similar, please let us know.
