Alan Barnes or American stars like Warren Vache and Scott Hamilton. He first came to notice with MYJO and NYJO in the 1980s. He has worked with many international stars, including jazz legends Ray Brown and Clark Terry.

MICHAEL SUTTON QUARTET

Michael Sutton

who played and recorded with jazz legend Bud Shank on his album In Good Company. As well as playing lead alto with the Four Tops, Jake has played with Malene Mortensen at the Pizza Express as part of the London Jazz Festival and headlined at the Duc des Lombards Jazz Club in Paris. The London Bebop Collective topped the bill at the Bandra and Utsav jazz festivals in India and appeared on Sky television’s Just Jazz. ‘Fryer is a stellar saxophonist who has earned a reputation as a player to be watched.’ – LA Jazz Scene

MARK NIGHTINGALE Mark Nightingale’s accomplished trombone can be heard in many of the finest jazz projects around, whether it be with the Dankworths, Andy Panayi,

Michael Sutton is a jazz singer of rare ability who studied at RADA, became infatuated with the songs of Johnny Mercer, and is now a regular on the Yorkshire jazz scene. He made a huge impression at last year’s Birmingham festival with his regular cohort, Leeds College of Music graduate Mike Cunliffe, on piano, and now returns with his new quartet.

MIKE BURNEY QUARTET Tenor saxist Mike Burney is still one of the great undiscovered gems of British jazz, partly because of his insistence on remaining in Birmingham. In fact Mike’s forays onto the national scene have not really been with the sort of bands that show his unique talents to advantage: Roy Wood’s Wizzard and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra. Birmingham festival audiences are in no doubt that Mike’s authoritative and inventive playing makes him a major player on the British jazz scene.

ARTISTS A-Z

MILLENNIUM EAGLE JAZZ BAND

The Midlands-based Millennium Eagle Jazz Band emerged as a direct result of the demise in 2005 of the very popular Eagle Jazz Band, formed by Ken Ingram and Bob Smith in 1951. Matt Palmer had recently folded his Millennium Jazz Band to join the Eagles, so it was thought appropriate to include ‘Millennium’ in the name of the new band. The band’s wide repertoire includes popular songs of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, classic jazz compositions by the likes of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton and New Orleans blues, stomps and marches. Matt Palmer also leads an acoustic quartet under the name BACKYARD MUSIC BOYS.

MUMBO JUMBO Mumbo Jumbo takes three of the Midlands’ most experienced blues musicians, throws them together in a broadly acoustic format and lets them deliver what they are best at – live music performance. The band brings together 115 years performing experience to create variety, interest, touch, flair – and foot stomping to boot!
