I am pleased to offer a welcome to Birmingham for our prestigious Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival. This is our 27th year of the festival that is one of the highlights of our cultural calendar.
It often feels that each year the festival gets bigger and bigger, accommodating more musicians and fans
annually. Last year alone the festival entertained almost 120,000 people with 218 performances in 81 venues, almost all of them with free admission and many in public places.
In addition to great Jazz and Blues the reason for the festival’s enduring appeal is its emphasis on inclusivity and openness. 2010 saw events take

place in shopping centres, city squares and streets, stately homes, arts centres, museums, two castles and even a zoo! Most of the performances are still free and open to all.
The Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival also feeds in to this city’s international reputation as we entertain artists from around the globe to come to Birmingham and experience the warmth of our welcome and the hospitality of a city that embraces music and culture at its heart.
