Lauren & Mike
What was special about where you got married?Murrells Inlet has become a very special place for the bride and her family since her parents retired there a few years back. It is where the bride’s family has made many of their most recent memories and it has been a location for the bride’s parents to rediscover happiness during their retirement. The location itself at Wachesaw Plantation was special because the setting was so beautiful and consummately southern.
What do-it-yourself projects did you
do? The majority of the DIY projects were done compliments of the bride’s mother and sister as the bride was overwhelmed at work during this time.
Candy Buffet – The candy buffet was truly a team effort between myself, my mother and my sister. We knew the idea of a candy buffet would amp up the fun factor but it did end up being a fair amount of work ordering the correct amount of candy. From the staging and purchasing of the vessels by my mother, to the labels and table decoration by my sister. One of the highlights was the towers of cake pops made by wrapping paper covered Styrofoam trees with color coordinated pin wheels on top decorated by the MOB.
Wedding programs - The programs for the ceremony were made by the sister of the bride/MOH by creating a template and replicating a front and back on thick cardstock using decorative fonts, the custom monogram and then gluing front to
back with a tongue depressor in the middle and ribbon tied around the handle to double as programs and fans.
Invitations – I purchased color coordinating black, white, and green invitations at Michael’s but enhanced them with the custom monogram and decorative fonts upon printing in addition to polka dot ribbon to really drive home the theme. The external envelope had hand written calligraphy of the address by my mother’s sister which really made them look special.
Favors – The favorswere two different CD’s that the bride and groom created based on their love of music. The inserts were cardstock with printed messages from the bride and groom to our guests and the outside envelope was ordered online in green to match the theme and then the sister of the bride/MOH decorated each of them with polka dot ribbon and the custom monogram. Each guest also got chocolate chip cookies in a monogrammed sleeve and a monogrammed bottle of water upon departure from the reception.
Welcome bags – The MOB & FOB spent time collecting tourist and visitor information to create custom welcome bags for all of the guests. They included golf tees that the FOB had customized, bottles of water with custom monogrammed labels, snacks, and other travel goodies for all our guests who came so far to celebrate our special day with us.

The MOB made sure the bags were all coordinating black and white with green tissue paper and a monogrammed label on each.
What advice do you have for other brides? Spend time figuring out what is important to you as a couple. We didn’t care as much about cake so we did the fun candy buffet, things like that where you can put your finances to better use in a more creative way. I would also say, stick with what you love. My mother originally disliked polka dots for fall because she thought they were more traditionally spring and summer and although I hesitated, I was so glad I stuck with what I loved because the polka dots look great in color and black and white pictures and they really captured the whimsical nature of the day. I would also encourage bride’s to leverage their resources that are available, which in some cases means relinquishing a little control. Since my parents and my sister and I all live far apart, we were all working on different parts of the wedding. I needed to trust that they were going to help me realize my vision without micro-managing the tasks. While I did have a pretty specific vision for the day, those people who know and love you best are really able to help you realize that because they know you so well and want you to be happy. My wedding would never have been so special if it wasn’t for everyone’s DIY projects and their personal touches.
