REAL WEDDINGS | Adrienne & James

How did you two meet? James and I met 8 years ago on an online dating website. Before there was Match and eHarmony there was a website where you could build your own “dream mate.” You could choose everything from physical features, spirituality, personality, desires; you name it you could choose it. Skeptical of the possibility that I could actually find a “dream mate”, I decided to put together the search of all searches. Tall, green eyes, athletic build, outgoing, adventurous, on and on. Not expecting much, I submitted my demanding request and out of a database of thousands of participants came only one result, James. Encouraged by a friend, I sent my one free message. The rest is internet dating history! Six patient years later James proposed.

How long was your engagement? Our engagement was 1 year and 10 months. Even though most of our friends and family thought we would rush into marriage after 6 years of dating, we realized that if we had waited this long, what was two more years. Interestingly, during those 6 years I thought a lot about what kind of ring I would want, how I would react to his proposal, what dress I would pick, our theme, colors, wedding location, etc. But once a reality, everything was different. We took our time thinking our planning through. We also really wanted to save money to avoid as much debt as possible, so we opened a joint savings account and started contributing monthly. This was a great idea, the funds added up quickly!

What inspired your wedding theme? I love the fall, it’s my favorite time of year. The weather is just right and the colors are brilliant and amazing! James wasn’t wedded to any specific time of year, so it was my choice. It was really hard to choose a theme, even colors, because there are so many things we love. Luckily we had one common idea, the outdoors and nature. Because James and I agreed to plan our wedding together, not one of us had the opportunity to dominate the process. That really taught us a lot about partnership and compromise. We found our wedding invitations at Michael’s, so that really set the tone. Our wedding location, with its Craftsman style architecture and woods-like surroundings, really spoke of the fall season and ultimately helped us decide on decorations. Everything just seemed to come together as we went.

What inspired your wedding color pallet? James enjoys neutral colors and I love vibrant colors, so it was a natural blend of browns, reds, golds, and rusts for us. Our wedding invitations were mostly brown, so we accented them with red ribbon. We added gold to the bridesmaid bouquets and ceremony flowers, and the rust color to our cake. We ended up with a lot more reds just because it was the easiest color to work with and one of our favorites. Our bridal party looked awesome in red, so we went for it and accented with the other colors.
