Jodi & Ben

What was special about where you got married? My husband works for Waterbrook Winery and spends a lot of his time in Walla Walla for work. We both love wine tasting, the outdoors, food and wine, so we thought it would be the perfect ambiance. We also wanted a neutral, comfortable outdoor location for my “small town/midwestern” Iowa family, and his “big city/west coast” Seattle family.

What do-it-yourself projects did you do? The most involved were the invitations. The invitations were books assembled with multiple pages, including covers, the formal invitation, a timeline, inserts, and maps. I included a postcard RSVP, bus ticket, rehearsal dinner invite, vineyard ranch invite, and farewell brunch inserts too. Every piece was designed in Photoshop and Indesign, hand cut, folded, and assembled. I even managed to get Ben to help in the final production line.

My favorite project was the Polaroid camera and guest book! I set a camera out on a table with a basket full of film for our guests to take photos. Each guest took photos of each other and inserted them into our guest book with their notes. As the night progressed, the photos went from formal to goofy! When the reception was over, Ben and I took the book back to our room and stayed up late looking through all the photos and notes. Our really close friends even used the book to announce they were pregnant by signing “and baby”. It was the best surprise and gift ever.

It was also really important to have out two Boston Terrier dogs in the wedding. I made a collar with a large purple flower for our little Zoe “flower girl”, and purchased a tuxedo collar and bow tie for our Rocky Dog “ring bearer”.

What advice do you have for other brides? Plan early and don’t wait till the last minute to finish the little details. I am an interior designer, and super detail oriented. I was regretfully assembling welcome bags, toiletry baskets, signs, and ceremony décor when my family arrived in town. You will never have as much time as you think you do. Also, don’t be afraid to recruit some help. You may think that you can do everything your self. But seriously, save your sanity and enjoy the process. I had more fun ordering Chinese take-out, opening a great bottle of wine, popping in a record, and enjoying the company of family and friends.

Lastly, hire the best photographer you can find! THIS IS NOT AN AREA TO DIY! After all your family leaves, the gifts are opened, and the music stops playing, there are only photos to reminisce upon. Our photographer was the first and best decision we made. She was able to capture all the purest emotion of the day. Those photos still bring me to tears looking through them.
