REAL WEDDINGS | Jodi & Ben
How did you two meet? His father (my client) and my co-worker invited us both to a birthday get together. Little did we know, they had schemed up a plan to introduce us….thankfully the “blind unforeseen setup” worked out!
How long was your engagement? 15 months. We were engaged on April 26,2009, and really didn’t want to plan a wedding in 5 short months. We really wanted a September wedding in wine country, so we choose September 18, 2010.
What inspired your wedding theme? Late summer/early fall harvest and the vineyards of course. September is the most beautiful month in Walla Walla. The vines are heavy with grapes and the leaves are just beginning to turn color. The air is crisp and the days are shorter, allowing for a cozy, more intimate ambiance. Our dinner menu included local farm fresh foods and an extensive wine menu. We also had a buffet of different local cheeses, breads and fruits. Our wedding cake was the real staple of the night. I had it designed with 5 tiers, drenched in fall fruits including wine grapes and leaves.
I wanted our guests to be comfortable and warm so we had blankets outside on the lounge furniture, and a fire in the outdoor fireplace. We even roasted s’mores on the fire! We wanted the entire evening to be centered around the outdoor patio and scenery, but it rained. Our band, The Rolling Blackouts, from Seattle performed that night. Unfortunately with the rain, there was no room for them to set up indoors, so they played outdoors under a large awning. I was mortified, until I noticed all our guests were dancing in the rain. In the end, it made for a more carefree and playful evening. Thankfully our Seattleite friends and family don’t melt in the rain!
What inspired your wedding color pallet? Again, harvest and the vineyards. I chose purple and green to represent that feeling. The girls wore deep purple dresses, and the guys wore tan suits. I wanted the reception to feel natural, and blend in with the outdoor surroundings. I used a sliced tree stump, moss, and apothecary jars filled with purple, red, and green grapes atop sage green linens for the decor. The tree stumps were quite the ordeal. Because we are “urban city dwellers” we did not have access to fallen trees and/or a chain saw. Nor did we trust ourselves to operate such a piece of machinery. My step father, whom lives in Iowa, sliced all 20 stumps, dried them, and shipped them to Seattle. It was such a sentimental feeling to have a little piece of my Iowa upbringing present.
