What do-it-yourself projects did you do? Everything from the wedding party’s apparel to the confetti had some element of DIY. It all comes down to having helpful friends and family! Not all my projects made it to the wedding day (I still have French netting and clips from a failed DIY birdcage veil!), but most of them were a lot of fun.
Bird and bear motif – Using her fantastic Photoshop skills, a friend helped me design a custom made curlicue with K&S initials, and a bird and bear silhouette motif. I incorporated these designs on the table numbers, ceremony programs, wedding favors and anything else paper I could think of.
Signs – The ceremony location might have been a bit hard to find off the road, so Kevin and I painted signs with arrows pointing to all the key locations: the ceremony, munchies, hugs (the receiving line!), bocce, and of course parking.
Flowers in jars – I collected various sizes and shapes of canning jars and pewter tankards from friends and thrift stores and
tied purple ribbons around them. My sister made pretty bouquets with flowers from our garden to fill them.
Table runners and chair bows – I spent entire afternoons cutting and sewing burlap table runners and purple organza chair bows. A leftover piece of burlap was stapled inside a large white antique photo frame , which we used to pin the table seating list to.
Tea favors – Kevin’s brother brought back loose tea from India to put in little tins as our wedding favors. We tied each of them with a bow and added our bird and bear motif to the tag!
Confetti – One of my dear friends enlisted a ‘confetti punching’ army to make our own eclectic and eco-friendly confetti. She spent so much time punching paper, and I ended up with beautiful custom confetti with little hearts and flowers!
Birdcage – A friend gave me the idea to get an old birdcage (also going with our theme), and spray-paint it white to use as a ‘card collector’ on the gift table. Guests just

slid their card through the little bars. It was charming and worked like a charm.
Ford Model A – The Ford Model A car we drove in was the ultimate in DIY, although I can’t take credit for that one! Kevin’s Grandpa built that car from parts he collected from junkyards over many years. It was such a privilege to drive in it!
What advice do you have for other brides? Go ahead, have fun planning and envisioning your wedding, and let your friends and family help you. But on the day of your wedding, give up your expectations and all those projects you worked so hard on. Smile, and let the day unfold. I planned an outdoor wedding in August, and it rained. Not all the little DIY details I worked so hard on were even noticed by guests because we had to head inside. In the end, everyone loved how unique of a summer wedding it was and how beautiful everything looked with colorful umbrellas everywhere. If you’re smiling, all your guests will be too and everything will go better than planned.
