REAL WEDDINGS | Shelly & Kevin

How did you two meet? We met in our grade five classroom in September 1997. Kevin was the new kid, standing about one foot taller than every other ten year old boy. It wasn’t love at first sight, but by high school we started dating and had our parents drive us to each other’s houses because we were too young to have our licenses!

How long was your engagement? We were engaged about eight months - engaged on December 17, 2009 and married on August 7, 2010.

What inspired your wedding theme? We both love the outdoors and wanted our wedding to contain that element of natural, rustic beauty. I tried to incorporate rustic elements such as burlap table runners, antique lanterns, old wine barrels with flower baskets on top, and flowers in mismatched jars and pewter mugs. A friend suggested the theme of “bird and bear” representing both the personality and physical size of Kevin and me, so we made a little bird and bear motif and incorporated it into as many things as we could. Having the ceremony outdoors in a backyard with stunning views of fields, farms, and the ocean in the distance (although not seen on the rainy wedding day!) next to a beautiful character house with a mossy roof was the easiest way to let the theme speak for itself.

What inspired your wedding color pallet?

I’d always imagined having green bridesmaid dresses. However, when Kevin and I got engaged, my sister (the maid of honor) already had three green bridesmaid dresses in her closet, and I didn’t think she needed another one. So somewhere along the line I decided to include many shades of purple to the wedding details, and hoped that the many natural shades of green in the ceremony setting would complement this nicely and satisfy my love of green. It also helped that Kevin’s Dad ran out the morning of the wedding and picked up a bunch of fuchsia and green umbrellas for the wedding party that happened to complement our colors perfectly!

What was special about where you got married? We got married in Kevin’s Oma and Opa’s (grandparent’s) backyard. There is certainly something special about saying your vows in the open air, even with a few raindrops. Oma and Opa spent the summer making their yard and garden beautiful for the big day, and when it rained, let all 140 guests inside their lovely house for refreshments after the ceremony. That was special.
