NATURAL TREATMENT

INGREDIENTS TO

LOOK OUT FOR Calendula – antiseptic, anti-infl ammatory and balancing

Chamomile – anti-infl ammatory and calming properties

Oak bark and witch hazel – both are natural astringents, anti-infl ammatory and soothing

Mint – antiseptic, cools and calms down redness

Rose – stimulates cell regeneration, diminishes scars and soothes

Sage – anti-bacterial, anti-infl ammatory and regulates oil production

Zinc – healing

Note: Soap and harsh foaming cleansers strip the skin of its protective layer. Using them actually stimulates sebum production which, in turn, aggravates acne.

STEP 2 After cleansing, help to close the pores and

stimulate the lymphatic system with a cool muslin compress and always follow with a toner. A toner will ensure all traces of cleanser have been removed and will restore balance and aid product absorption. Look for a gentle toner with a natural certifi cation from someone like Ecocert. This will ensure any addded alcohol is of natural origin and not petroleum based. This is something which may harm the skin’s protective barrier.

STEP 3 Whether it’s oily or dry, acneic skin needs

moisture! Without moisture, the skin tries to make its own, which only exacerbates the problem further. To help slow down excess sebum

production after cleansing and toning, use a moisturiser with active ingredients. The use of a face oil like Primavera Grape Seed Oil is a wonderful way to slow down sebum production, but if you would prefer to have a light oil-free fi nish on your skin, then a moisturiser with specially selected ingredients will provide just enough moisture, whilst calming and balancing. Look for a gentle moisturising lotion to suit your skin type. This will help soothe and calm acne, without clogging the pores with rich petroleum-based creams.

STEP 4 Using a face mask once a week is a good

habit to get into and gives two-fold benefi ts. Firstly, it is a great chance to relax, and secondly, it allows plenty of time for the active natural ingredients to penetrate and work their magic! Clay-based masks will help draw

STEP 1 Gentle effective cleansing is so important – I

am a big fan of using organic unbleached muslin cloths to increase effectiveness. Use a warm cloth as a compress to help open pores and aid the effectiveness of the cleanser. If you like the feel of a foaming cleanser, choose one that’s super-gentle like MÁDARA Deep Purifying Foam and if you wear a lot of make-up or prefer a creamy cleanser, try their Cleansing Milk.

out impurities and even skin tone – I use Primavera Antioxidant Mask in my therapies. These contain rose oil and pomegranate seed oil to hydrate and restore radiance but a very acneic skin may benefi t from weekly treatments by a skin-care specialist, who will be glad to advise on this. By following these steps, it should help you get your problem skin under control.

NaturalSOLUTION

Dr Sarah Brewer is a GP and natural health guru and she says, “Although spots are often thought of as a teenage problem, a signifi cant number

of adults in their 30s and 40s are affected, too. It’s been discovered that dairy peptides contain immune-boosting substances, such as lactoferrin, which can reduce the growth of the causative bacteria and therefore improve skin infl ammation. This is great news for those having to cope with the emotional and physical discomfort associated with recurrent skin blemishes. Taking a product that contains dairy peptides offers a natural and effective approach to treatment. However, drinking milk itself is not really effective as milk contains additional hormones that can actually make acne worse.” Dr Sarah Brewer recommends

help: clear skin for a natural option. She explains, “This unique product uses the power of nature and science to tackle the problem of spots and blemishes. It contains 100% natural ingredients, including praventin – a bioactive protein extracted from milk – that’s proven to deliver results after six weeks. It’s water- soluble and you need to take a sachet orally, twice a day.” It also contains one of our favourite

natural ingredients, aloe vera, which makes the most of its healing properties and has a smoothing and nourishing effect on the skin. It is also high in oligofructose, which is a natural source of soluble fi bre. It is known that increasing your fi bre intake prevents your body from expelling the toxins that affect the skin and helps to avert acne.
