SB . HOW WOULD PEOPLE FIND A GOOD,
REPUTABLE HYPNOTHERAPIST? AO
. Word of mouth is the best way best. Registered
hypnotherapists whose training satisfies current national occupational standards can be found listed at
www.cnhc.org.uk and
www.general-hypnotherapy-
register.com.

have about three sessions. A minority may have to go up to six. I’ve had only one client want more than that – she had seven.
SB . IS HYPNOTHERAPY GROWING IN POPULARITY? AO
. It seems to be. I certainly have an increasing number of people coming to me for hypnotherapy compared to say, life-coaching sessions.
SB . WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE COME TO YOU FOR . At the moment, people with stress and anxiety

problems which manifest in all sorts of ways, from panic attacks and OCD to IBS and insomnia are probably the largest group. Sufferers from depression and those who feel a lack of sense of purpose are another large group. After that, it’s probably motivation and confidence issues, then smoking and weight loss.
SB . WHAT SORT OF RESULTS HAVE YOU HAD? AO . Very good. Typically clients will report

improvements using a self-rating system over the course of treatment – often after the first session and before we’ve even done anything that looks like traditional hypnosis. It’s difficult to give figures about success rates, but I estimate that it’s in the region of 80% after three sessions with 95% reporting some improvement and feeling generally more positive. Long-term, I just don’t have the data, but anecdotally, I do meet people a few years down the line who are happy to tell me that things are going well. The amount of word-of-mouth recommendations I get also suggests a good number of satisfied clients. One woman who had come with anxiety as a
presenting issue was really pleased that after doing the relaxation exercises at home, her blood pressure had fallen enough that the doctor wasn’t going to prescribe medication for her anymore. An IBS sufferer wasn’t even sure if she’d be able
to make it to her appointment – she was anxious about travelling across town and not being within easy reach of a toilet en-route. She was astonished to find that the journey back after her first session just wasn’t a problem and that her symptoms just went and never came back.
