NATURAL THERAPY ‘
The secret to a great treatment is compassion during consultation, then a combination of rhythm and pressure on specifi c points
CONTROLLED BREATHING OR PRANAYAMA Pranayama is the science of breath control. It consists of a series of exercises especially intended to meet the body’s needs and keep it in vibrant health. It helps fi ght stress and relaxes the body. For both therapist and client, it helps with focus and takes the treatment to a deeper level, where there is much more of a connection emotionally.
WHAT OIL SHOULD I USE? Generally speaking, the most appropriate oil formula to use is one that has an ‘opposite’ quality to their body type, or dosha, as follows: Vata: relaxing Pitta: soothing Kapha: energising
NATURAL? We have a saying in Ayurveda that you should only put product on your body that you would not put inside, meaning you should think of your oils as food! I hasten to say, the formulas should therefore be as natural and as high grade as possible, so that the therapeutic qualities are not reduced.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS With Ayurvedic therapy, we are not working on muscles and tissues, but instead on three types of energy centre, as follows:
THE CHAKRAS
Meaning ‘wheel or disc’ in Sanskrit. There are seven charkas located along the spine and they are seen as spinning energy in the body, by which we maintain physical and mental health.
THE NADIS These are a network of fourteen subtle nerves that run from the chakras to various points in the body and they energise our physiological systems. The door to the nadis is threefold – through the mind, through breathing (pranayama) or through the marmas (vital points).
THE MARMAS These are pressure or energy points located across the body. There are 107 from head to toe and are also seen as sensitive regions that develop from the nadis. By massaging marma, you have access to the nadis, and therefore the inner energy channels.
