Muth Family Learning Center Summer is a Great Time for Reading
Summer is a time that students, parents and teachers can regroup and relax.
Wait! There is summer school, family vacations, college visits, summer jobs, etc. Hopefully everyone can find spaces to fill with true leisure.
Leisure does not mean lazy. Even while resting in a hammock, one can think. Certainly, one can read! Most certainly, one should read!
When students and parents ask me how best to prepare for college testing, I tell them to read anything and everything possible. Reading fires up brain cells and helps generate new memory and thinking connections. There is no such thing as disliking reading. Everyone is reading all the time: signs, body language, sport plays, menus, texts, ads, etc. Reading is also listening and for some people, books on CD/ or downloaded onto iPods/MP3s are the way to go.
Helen Keller was blind and deaf but she read with her fingers. Beethoven was deaf but he listened to the rhythms and chords in his mind’s eye. Another way to invigorate reading is to see/rent movies based on books. Family discussions of movies and reading help to energize verbal problem solving. Believe it or not, most of math is verbal. So reading can help with math as well. What is that problem really asking? The language of math is as important as numbers.
Reading needs to be cultivated like a garden. It requires time, healthy surroundings, interest, care, and goals. Check out used bookstores! Pick a subject and find related books. Speed read and see how much you can remember. Above all, see reading as a gift and not a chore. Your garden will flourish!
Happy reading everyone! As always, we welcome your visit and/or questions to the Muth Family Learning Center. Please contact Director Marilyn Wilson

Many athletic programs at Mater Dei High School will be offering a summer camp. The athletic summer camps are a great way to meet the coaches and returning players while becoming more familiar with Mater Dei’s campus and facilities.
Incoming freshmen find them helpful in making new friends before classes begin in the fall. Youth camps offer younger children the opportunity to begin exploring all that Mater Dei has to offer.
