Communication with Your Stylist... CONTINUED
response to my last column! Many of you have asked me to write a similar column focusing on hair color, so here it is! Since there are several different types of color used to dye hair in salons, it’s helpful to know how they work by breaking down their application and clarifying terminology.
Thanks to all my readers for the overwhelming
• PERMANENT hair color is used to make the hair lighter and to deposit and/or remove tone. Users of permanent color will get a definite line of demarcation which is the line between natural hair and chemically treated hair as hair grows out, requiring regular maintenance.
• DEMI-PERMANENT is for deposit only and will not wash out after a certain amount of time. It will fade to a degree, just like permanent hair color, but not as much. The line of demar- cation is very slight, if noticeable at all.
SEMI-PERMANENT color is designed to gradually rinse out after a certain number of washes. I can’t imagine that any salon would use a semi-permanent hair color – these are mostly found in drug stores and applied at home.
DIRECT DYES are crazy fashion colors, like pink and purple. There isn’t a developer used to process and are instead applied directly to hair. Absorption is determined by the indi- vidual’s hair’s porosity.
TONERS are used to neutralize an unwanted color tone after a color service. For example, if you received highlights that are turning brassy, the proper toner will help to mask the unwanted metallic shade.
GLAZE is used to add shine to hair. A very light pastel tone can be added to the glaze mixture before application to neu- tralize unwanted tones. The effects of both glaze and toner are not long lasting, so don’t be afraid to have either one applied at the salon in between your regular color services!
your stylist, ensuring that you get the best possible beauty results! In the next issue, I will talk about blondes, referring back to the above terminology. So please feel free to tear it out and save, or refresh your
