S: I would love, just love, to borrow your brother for one weekend. We’re right outside Miami, and he can pose as Akon and then I’ll get, you know, the second hand ponanny. I’m fine with that!

AKON: Yo! You nuts man! Second hand ponanny! Scrappy, that sounds like a song right there. (Laughing)

S: (laughing) There you go! Is that how songs come to you?

AKON: That’s exactly how they come, just like this right here, "Sec- ond Hand Ponanny!" I love it!

S: Diamond mine owner, record label exec, and artist… do these roles feed each other? Do those individual experiences, despite the fact that they’re different disciplines, help one another out? Or sometimes are you in the studio saying, "I wonder what Lady Gaga’s doing?”

AKON: (laughing) Naw, when I’m in the studio my only focus is the music. It’s on the track that I’m currently working on. I don’t normally think about anything outside of what I’m trying to cre- ate in the lab. That’s why half the time when I’m in the studio it’s like a cave and nobody can reach me. I always try to keep outside thoughts completely separate - my musical creativity and my en- trepreneurial side are always running in different directions.

S: Buddy, you started out from really humble beginnings. Now you’re getting paid big time. It is such a radical economic, social and cultural shift. But you really embrace it and celebrate the mo- ment. Unlike most others, you’re like a little kid, soaking every- thing up like you're at Disney! So what keeps you so driven now that you can buy whatever toy you desire?

AKON: Yo, what gets me going is the thought that I can keep it goin’. Adrenaline, baby!

I have so much fun doing what I do it doesn’t

even feel like work. Every trip just feels like a vacation and I have a great time with every friend I meet. I just wanna stay blessed and continue to live this way for the next forty-fifty years. So that’s the key right now. It’s just a matter of doin’ what I’ve been doing, and not change the program too much so I can continue to be success- ful and enjoy the life that I’m living.
