Woodman’s Restaurant: Voted Best Fried Clams in New England by Yankee Magazine

by Doug Robinson Woodman’s Restaurant, Charles Bancroft Highway, Litchfield,

was once again voted to serve the “Best Fried Clams” in New Hampshire, according to Yankee Magazine. “Used to be you had to go south of the border (to Essex, MA) to get a taste of the real thing, at the original Woodman’s (where it’s said the fried clam was invented in 1916). No more: Head to Mel’s Funway Park, hit a few at the driving range, then chow down on Woodman’s legendary goodness,” writes the review. Yankee Magazine’s

Travel Guide to New England, on newsstands April 26, has named 37 local establishments in New Hampshire as “Best of New England – Editors’ Choice” winners for 2011. This designation is awarded by Yankee’s editors and contributors, who name select restaurants, lodgings, and attractions in New England to the exclusive list. This special issue also names 20 “Top Events” in New Hampshire, for a total of 120 events across New England. For 35 years, Yankee’s Travel Guide has been the most widely distributed and best-selling guide to the six-state region, providing readers with a comprehensive vacation-planning tool and daily reference.

“Our ‘Best of New England’ issue is about where we live and

play and raise our families. These places happen to be the cities and villages, the beaches, mountains, and forests, where visitors from around the world come to spend precious vacation days,” says Editor Mel Allen. “We’ve filled our pages with the places we want to see, and have seen, and will see again. Immerse yourself in these places to visit, as beautiful as any in the world, plus more

than 250 ‘Bests,’ our recommendations for inns, shopping, sights, restaurants, adventures, and what-have-you.” Quoted as being “An American Cult Classic right up there with baseball and apple pie” by the famous Zagat Restaurant Guide and having received numerous awards for excellence, including “Best Seafood in America” by Forbes Magazine, the Woodman’s of Essex, MA, and now of Litchfield, remains a humble, hard-working American family. “We recognize that our success is based on generations of hard work mixed with a few strokes of genuine luck,” says Rhonda Woodman. That being said,

Packed a mile high, the Woodman’s clam dinner plate overflows with rich and succulent clams breaded with Woodman’s classic family secret recipe, freshly fried French fries, and large onion rings

the Woodmans are proud of their fifth- generation restaurant and clambake catering business, whose success is built from a foundation of Core Values: Serve only the best food with genuine and caring service, treat your staff with appreciation and respect, honor your family, and give

back to the community you are a part of. “Simple values—easy to say but not as easy to achieve—however, they guide us and we know what we are trying to do. And when we fall short—which we can at times—we make it right. It all boils down to two words—We Care,” says Rhonda. Having stood the test of time, this year marks their 97th year in business, and their roadmap for success will guide the new restaurant in its third season, located at Mel’s Funway Park in Litchfield, as well. Woodman’s in Litchfield is located at 454 Charles Bancroft

submitted by Rachel Scanzani In April and May, the members of Hudson Grange 11 visited the elementary schools of Hudson and Litchfield to deliver dictionaries to the third-grade students. This year, more than 400 dictionaries were delivered to each student for them to keep. This annual project is a part of the national Dictionary Project (www.dictionaryproject.org), whose goal is to improve reading and writing by providing a dictionary to every student. This project is a great source of pride for Hudson Grange and something we enjoy doing each year. Hudson Grange is a non-profit organization that seeks to help improve and support the community. This project was possible with the help of the generous donations from the Hudson Junior Women’s Club, Hudson-Litchfield Rotary, Sam’s Club of Hudson, and Mrs. Pat Jewett. Hudson Grange meets the second and fourth Tuesdays at the Wattannick Grange Hall in Hudson at 7:30 p.m. For additional information about Hudson Grange or how you can become involved in the Dictionary Project, contact Jerry Leclerc at 882-8602.

Lifejackets for Children

Remember: Lifejackets only work when they are worn—they do not take the place of supervision! Why should your child wear a lifejacket? Drowning is often silent, takes as little as five minutes, and usually happens when an adult is nearby. No one can watch a child every second. There are different types of lifejackets: Type I, Type II, Type

III, Type IV, and Type V. The types most helpful for near-shore recreational boating are Type II and Type III. When buying a lifejacket, check for:

• Coast Guard-approved label. Some children’s swimsuits have flotation sewn into them and may or may not be approved as lifejackets. New products are being developed all the time, and lifejackets that are worn like a swimsuit are available for children. Just be sure that they are labeled as U.S. Coast Guard-approved lifejackets.

• A snug fit. Check weight and size on the label and try the lifejacket on your child. Pick up your child by the shoulders of the lifejacket; the child’s chin and ears won’t slip through a proper fit.

• Head support for younger children. A well-designed lifejacket will support the child’s head when the child is in the water.

• A strap between the legs on vest-style lifejackets. This is a good feature because it helps prevent the vest from coming off.

• Comfort and appearance. This is especially important for teens who are less likely to wear a lifejacket.
