The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor
Appreciation for Donations
My name is Nicholas Leary. I am but one of a group of dedicated leaders with Cub Scout Pack 252 in Hudson. I am writing to share with you our witness of good citizenship, in the form of Corporate Citizenship. Cub Scouting strives to initiate character development early on in a boy’s Scouting journey through 12 character connections. Chiefly among them is Citizenship. Pack 252 is a thriving Cub Scout Pack in South Hudson and
storage of our Pinewood Derby track, Chuck wagon, and other equipment was becoming a challenge. We were simply outgrowing our family basements and needed a shed. Early one February morning, I e-mailed Reeds Ferry Sheds in the hopes that we might be able to purchase a shed at a discount or for the cost of materials. Much to my surprise and delight, 28 minutes after sending that e-mail to Tim Carlton, the owner of Reeds Ferry Sheds, he replied and offered us a 10-foot by 12-foot shed for free. As we waited for the snow to melt, we contacted Brox Industries to inquire about the cost of gravel for the building to sit on. They also responded quickly. And once more, we were blessed with a donation. Two days later, we took delivery of six tons of gravel for the shed to rest over. On April 12, we gratefully accepted delivery of our new shed and expect it will serve Cub Scout Pack 252 for generations to come. Pack 252 would like to publicly thank both Brox Industries and Reeds Ferry Sheds for their generosity and support of Cub Scouting. I encourage your readers to patronize these businesses and thank them for their generosity to the community.

Recycling Committee Scavenger Hunt Contest Announces Winners
GO BACK!
submitted by the Recycling Committee The third annual Earth Day contest in Hudson’s elementary schools sponsored by the Town Recycling Committee was a huge success, with over 410 entries submitted by Earth Day 2011. The contest was focused on students searching Committee- approved recycling Websites in cooperation with teachers and parents to find the answers to five basic and three bonus questions related to Earth Day and recycling facts. All five elementary schools participated with the highest numbers of contest entries received from Presentation of Mary Academy (PMA), Hills Garrison School, and Nottingham West (NWES). The class with the highest numbers of entries was Room 305 at NWES, closely followed by NWES Room 408 and PMA 5JD. Winners of the contest are Paola Matos, fourth grade, NWES; Amanda Nolan, first grade, Hills Garrison; Brad Dubay, fourth grade, PMA; Corey Oak, third grade, H.O. Smith; and Tom Bondaruk, first grade, Library Street. Certificates and prizes will be awarded by the Selectmen and representatives of Enterprise Bank at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday, May 24. Hi, I’m Dr. Ryan Barclay, D.C.
and popsicle parties are planned for the classes with highest levels of student participation. Previous contests in the elementary schools include a poster contest in 2009 and a slogan contest in 2010, which resulted in four winning slogans appearing on banners in the schools and other town venues. The number of entries in the Scavenger Hunt far outnumber the earlier contests and demonstrate the enthusiasm and commitment to protecting the environment through recycling among the youth of Hudson.

My name is Jacob McQuesten and I am currently a freshman at Campbell High School here in Litchfield. I am trying to get a jump start on my sophomore project that is needed in order to graduate from Campbell. My project is to build picnic tables for the old muster grounds that are across the street from the Litchfield Fire Station and Historical Society building. I will be having a bake sale and selling water at the Memorial Day celebration Monday. The celebration kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m., followed by a brief service in front of the historical society and fire station to honor those who have died for our freedom. I have decided to build these picnic tables as my project to get kids and adults alike outside and away from television and video games. Everyone should enjoy this great town and I believe that this is something that everyone can benefit from. I look forward to your support and thank you. I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day and I look forward to seeing many of you Monday.
