submitted by Sonny Tylus On Thursday evening, May 12, the Greater Salem Caregivers hosted its second annual “Salem Caregivers Bocce Tournament.” The event was held at the Sons of Italy in Lawrence, MA, and was organized under the direction of Mario Pagnoni, the “Bocce Guy,” who operates the “The Joy of Bocce, LLC” in Methuen, MA. The evening began with a delicious Italian meal served up by the Sons of Italy that was enjoyed by all. After the meal, the games began. Many of the players were playing for the first time and were amazed to realize how quickly they were able to learn the rules and how easy bocce is to play. They also found out how much fun it is, especially the camaraderie and the good-natured competition that takes

place between the teams. This year’s games featured a trophy presented to teams competing in the “Salem Banks” category. The 2011 Bocce Champions winner is the Salem Branch of Pentucket Bank. The Greater Salem Caregivers,

who have been servicing the elderly and disabled in Salem, Atkinson, Plaistow, and Pelham since 1989, would like to thank everyone who participated and to those businesses and civic organizations that sponsored the event: Enterprise Bank, Coco & Early Associates, Salem Kiwanis Club, Yoga – Balance for Life, and Sonny Tylus of Advertising & Business Service Inc. We are also very grateful to the

Lawrence Sons of Italy for being such great hosts and for being so supportive of the Caregivers.

Sixteen new and returning area restaurants gathered at Atkinson Country Club, providing samples of their finest dishes at the 14th Annual Taste of Greater Salem. The event, sponsored by the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, was sold out with over 350 guests in attendance. Sheryl Parsons of Enterprise Bank was committee chair. New restaurants included Jim’s Ice Cream Barn, Polcari’s, and Tuscan Kitchen. Some returning restaurants were Chief Wok Restaurant, Salemhaven, and The Atkinson Resort and Country Club. The wide variety of food included shrimp samples from Brookstone Grille, mini Italian subs from Moe’s Italian Sandwiches, a chocolate fountain with items for dipping from Atkinson Country Club, and raviolis from Tuscan Kitchen. “It was nice to see the community come out to support such a nice event, with some on the proceeds going to benefit scholarships for local kids,” said Sonny Tylus, a member of the Chamber Board of Directors. He also felt the event was a great opportunity for area businesses to show off their best dishes.
