by Chris White The Salem girls’ tennis team sent off its seniors in style with a 9-0 sweep of Dover last Thursday, May 19. The match was the final competition at Michele Park for the careers of seniors Danica Blakslee, Zara Ali, Kelly O’Brien, Olivia Lospennato, and Melissa Ouellet. They were recognized after the match where Salem coach Curtis Killion talked about their dedication and commitment to the program.
Among other things, Killion mentioned how Blakslee, Salem’s top player, always had the uncanny ability to come up with a victory when the team needed it most. He talked about how Ali and O’Brien benefited the team as reserve players with the support and dedication they showed to the program. He also noted how Lospennato and Ouellet played a role in setting the proper tone and character for the team. “They have been great leaders and have a lot of energy,” Killion said about his senior group. “I think the thing that distinguishes them was the way they supported their teammates.” Individual match play winners included Danica Blakslee (8-4), Cassie Hailson (8-1), Olivia Barberian (9-8, 7-5), Adriana Lonardo (8-1), Kelsey Perrault (8-2), and Brenna Blakslee (8-3). Taking wins in doubles competition were the teams of Danica Blakslee and Hailson (8-3), Barberian and Lonardo (8-6), and Perrault and Brenna Blakslee (8-1). The win against Dover put the Blue Devils in position to secure the fifth seed in Division I with a victory at Winnacunnet the next day.
The Devils went on to defeat Winnacunnet, 6-3, rounding out their regular season mark at 10-4 and earning the right to meet with fourth-seeded Alvirne in the Division I quarterfinals the following Wednesday.
