Families and Friends of Pelham Use Hearts and Feet to Fight Cancer

submitted by Maria Moujaes and Mary Collins, Publicity Co-Chairs Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the 2011 Second American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Pelham gets underway, with 73 teams of residents gathering at Harris Family Track and Field on June 4 at 2 p.m. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park, or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups—people from all walks of life—all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

The concluding event of the Windham Endowment for Community

Advancement’s Windham High School (WHS) Capital Campaign took place on Thursday, May 12, in the atrium of the high school, where over 75 residents, guests, and representatives of organizations and corporations were recognized for their extraordinary generosity to the students and community of Windham. In addition to short remarks by several people, a plaque thanking the major donors was unveiled. “Residents of Windham stepped forward during very difficult economic

times,” said Diane Carpenter, Campaign Chair. “Together with matching funds, their support of the Capital Campaign helped raise over $125,000 for Fine Arts, Technology, and the Sciences. This program support will enhance the high school for both the students and the residents of the community.” The keynote speaker was Dr. Bruce Anderson, Vice Chair of the Windham

School Board and longtime supporter of the Windham Endowment. Dr. Anderson said, “Whether you donated $10 or $10,000, I and everyone who has served on the Board during the high school project are forever in your debt for your support of this effort.” In speaking about the plaque, Dr. Anderson went on to say, “This plaque is a statement that at a time in history when a community came together to build this school, a group of people committed significant financial resources to make it truly outstanding. This plaque and tonight’s gathering celebrate much more than the amount of money the Capital Campaign has raised, but rather a legacy.” With the conclusion of the Campaign, the Windham Endowment has shifted its focus to other environmental, recreational, cultural, and educational initiatives in the community. Second American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Pelham. This group is excited about the overwhelming outpouring of support in this town. As of this time, over $54,000 has been raised. The event will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 5. We will be entertained by Pelham’s finest DJ Kevin Gettings. There will be prizes for best costumes and many other themed hours during the event. Many teams will have on-site fundraising that day. Come down and join us at this event. Some of the fundraising on- site events will be a chance to win Patriots tickets, Red Sox tickets, Red Sox authentic jackets, Celtics tickets, a quilt, and the list goes on. “Relay is a unique opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against the disease,” said Sue Bianchi, Co-Volunteer Chair for the Relay For Life of Pelham. “Many of the participants are cancer survivors, which

serves as a reminder that our community is not immune to this disease and that by participating in Relay, we are joining with the American Cancer Society’s efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” added Sara-Jean Caira, Co-Volunteer Chair for the Relay For Life of Pelham. Last year was Pelham’s first Relay event. Pelham raised over $180,000. Seventy-five teams participated with 892 individuals, including 64 survivors. Funds raised at Relay For Life of Pelham are enabling

the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community by supporting vital, cutting-edge cancer research; providing cancer patients with services such as transportation to treatment, free lodging at our Hope Lodge, and round- the-clock support at our national cancer information center available at 1-800-227-2345 anytime, day or night; publishing life-saving literature on cancer prevention, detection, and tobacco control; and developing a new generation of medicines that help those battling cancer. Relay For Life’s Luminaria Ceremony takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who

Back” Ceremony, in which a community leader will inspire Relay participants with his or her own commitment and will challenge them to take a personal pledge of action (e.g., stop smoking, eat more healthfully, exercise regularly, etc.) in fighting back. To find out how you may form a team and get involved, please call 1-800-227-2345 or visit RelayForLife.org/ PelhamNH. The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345, or visit cancer. org.
