Identical twins Nicole and Tabitha Tay created SEA Games history on 9 Dec 2007 when they were crowned joint gold medallists in the women’s artistic gymnastics all-round fi nal at Korat, Thailand. Both chalked up identical scores of 54.20.

Gold Medal For Underwater Hokey
Joey Carpio helped Singapore’s Stirling Under- water Hockey Club clinch a gold medal (elite mixed division) and two silvers (elite men and women) in Nov 2008 for the Asian champion- ships in Manila. Underwater hockey is played by pushing or hitting the puck into the gutter of a 30cm tall goal-post. Players hold their breath in depths of up to 2.1m.
First Woman In IOC First Gold For Gymnastics Team
The fi rst gold won by a team in gymnastics was at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila. Sisters Lee Wen Si and Lee Wen Ling, identical twins Nicole and Tabitha Tay, Lim Heem Wei and Nur Atikah Nabilah captured the women’s artistic team title with a score of 128.195 points.
Most Gymnastics Medals At SEA Games
The most successful gymnast at the SEA Games is Nicole Tay Xi Hui, whose accomplish- ments at age 14 include two golds (team and fl oor exercise) and one silver (uneven bars) at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila.
Youngest Competitor In The SEA Games
The youngest person in the SEA Games is gymnast Eileen Chai Ee Juang. She was only seven when she competed in the 1985 SEA Games in Bangkok.
First Gold Medallist In An International Tournament
Yip Kwan Tai won the fi rst gold medal for gymnastics at the 1979 SEA Games in Jakarta.
Youngest Gold Medallist In An International Tournament
The youngest gold medal winner in gymastics was at the 1988 Asean Schools Gymnastics Champion- ship in Bangkok, won by Eileen Chai Ee Juang at age 10.
Annabel Pennefather was the fi rst woman to be named president of the Singapore Hockey Federation in 1981 and the fi rst woman Olympic Chef de Mission when she led the Sin- gapore athletes to Athens in 2004. She was also the fi rst Singaporean woman to join the International Olympic Council in 2005.
First International Unicycle Hockey Match
Singapore’s fi rst international unicycle hockey match against Hong Kong was recorded on 21 Nov 2004. Team Singapore won 15-4 against the competitor.

First SEA Games Hockey Gold
Melanie Martens scored the winning goal against the Malaysians in the 1993 SEA Games and brought home the fi rst hockey gold for Singapore.
Largest Singapore Team At Olympics
In 1956, Singapore sent 18 of its hockey players to the Olympic Games at Melbourne. The entire delegation of 52 athletes was the largest Singapore ever sent to the Games. The hockey team fi nished in eighth position. Hockey legend Percy Pennefather played centre-forward in the games.

First To Achieve 1,000 Wins On MRA Circuit
In Nov 2007, Jockey Saimee Jumaat became the fi rst local rider to achieve 1,000 wins on the Malayan Racing Association circuit. The association was formed in 1896 to regulate and coordinate racing at the four turf clubs in Penang, Perak, Selangor and Singapore.
Judo Most Bemedalled Judoka
At the 1987 SEA Games, in the open category for judo, Ho Yen Chye won a total of seven medals, including a gold medal. He bagged a medal for every outing at the Asian and SEA Games from 1983 to 1991. Ho was also national champion for nine consecutive years in the heavyweight category, from 1984 to 1992.
First Woman To Take Part In Singapore Gold Cup
Sheryl Cheam was the fi rst female jockey to take part in Singapore Gold Cup held on 12 Nov 2006 riding a horse named Big Easy. She was the only female jockey in the 2,200m race which fi rst made its debut in 1924.
Largest Racing Prize
The annual Singapore Airlines International Cup (SIA Cup) was started in 2000 in conjunc- tion with the offi cial opening of the new Singapore Racecourse in Kranji. With a purse of S$3 million, the race attracted some of the best horses from around the world to compete in the 2,000m race.
Biggest Horse Racing Prize
Jockey Saimee Ju- maat was the fi rst Singaporean to win the SIA Cup held in 2000. Saimee rode on Ouzo to win S$3 million, the biggest prize in Singapore racing.
First Race Course
The fi rst horse racing course in Singapore was located at Farrer Park. It was fi rst called Sin- gapore Race Course and was founded in 1843. The race course was relocated to Bukit Timah Road in 1935, and to Kranji in 2001.
First Horse Race
The fi rst horse race took place on 23 Feb 1843 at the Farrer Park and the prize-money was $150.
First SEA Games Gold
KS Moorthy won a gold for Singapore at the 1965 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. Moorthy represented Malaysia in judo at the 1964 Olympic Games.
First To Achieve Highest Grade Referee Certifi cate
KS Moorthy was the fi rst Singaporean judoka to achieve the highest Grade A certifi cation as judo referee. He subsequently served as referee or technical jury member at all levels, from the Olympic Games to the SEA Games. He has a ninth dan in judo and jujutsu.
Quickest Match
Ang Teck Bee (father of swimmer Ang Peng Siong) once defeated an opponent in a judo tour- nament held between Malaysia and Singapore in a record time of 8 sec, using an uchimata (inner thigh) throw. He won gold medals in the heavyweight and open categories in judo competitions between Singapore and Malaysia in the early 1960s. He represented Singapore in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics but was disqualifi ed at the last minute because he did not make the weight stipulation for the heavyweight division.
